Each time I see the name of a child’s book, I think to myself “what a boring book” but contrary to popular belief there some valuable lessons that can be taught through children’s book. And the same can said about Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin, Jr. & John Archambault. Expect with this book I didn’t know what to expect by just looking at the title. Once I started reading the book with my nephews, I notice how after we were finished reading the book, I notice how they immediately started trying rhyme or, at least, try to rhyme and I joined in with them and turn it into a game to see who could come up with the best rhymes.

A great way to get children more involved and engaged in the classroom is by using poems as a guide towards a student’s learning. On Tuesday, we all shared titles of our favorite books and some kindergartners also brought their favorite books to share and showed us their favorite page from those books and explained why it was their favorite page. While many stories take the initiative to tell the story more innocently for children, there is a limit on how much innocence is utilized. The poems A Barred Owl and The History Teacher are two completely different poems giving off the same message, containing innocence, but not too extreme. Each poem has the adults teaching the children what is good and bad in the world without giving them fear. The literary devices utilized in each poem portray different intentions. In A Barred Owl, Richard Wilbur utilizes personification, imagery, and irony to portray the innocence being seen throughout the poem, while in The History Teacher, Billy Collins utilizes syntax, tone and theme.

On this day, my UTSA partner, Alexis Perez, also did her read aloud, so Alexis and I split the classroom up into two separate groups. Alexis read her book aloud to Ms. Carrillo’s group in the block area, and I read my book aloud to Mr. Ramierz’s group (the teacher assistant’s group) in the book area.
