Would you believe me if I told you that many people say the Great Chicago Fire, a fire which destroyed 17,000 structures, left 100,000 people homeless, killed 300 people, and caused about $200 million in damages was the best thing that happened to Chicago? Chicago changed as a result of this fire in three ways; fire codes/laws, organization of buildings, and economic development and population growth. The first way Chicago changed as a result of the great fire was by passing fire codes and laws. Before the fire they did not have many laws or codes to prevent fires and about two thirds of the buildings were made entirely of wood, which is the main reason the fire got so big. Neighbors reported seeing a number of flames appearing from the cow barn. Firemen instantly spotted the fire but miscalculated how big it really was. There are a lot of problems Detroit is facing, one of them is there incidence rate for fires. All the lives that were lost that day because of the lack of safety laws is terrible. A manager attempted to use a fire hose to put out the fire and could not do so because it was rusted shut. With the one elevator that was working for a very short period of time, girls started jumping down elevator shafts and going through stairwells just to come to a locked door and burn alive. Chaos erupted with the earthquake leading to fire break outs throughout San Francisco (Cameron and Gordon. Pgs 69-73).The earthquake and the resulting fires caused destruction to majority of the city with buildings crumbling and igniting into flames. Many people died along with thousands and thousands of people being left homeless. This devastating earthquake left the city and United States in a financial crisis. The fire opened people’s eyes to a system that was in dire need of reform, Drehle even stating that, “it was the crucial moment in a potent chain of events…that ultimately forced fundamental reforms [in]…the whole nation” (Drehle, 2003, p.3). The tragedy lead to the strengthening of reform movements as more and more joined their cause, evidenced by, “By organizing themselves and asserting their strength, the workers were beginning to make progress…’[it] was more than a strike’; it was ‘an industrial revolution’” (Drehle, 2003, p.172). The fire urged people to fight for reform, and reforms were passed, Drehle stating that, “The work of 1912 produced a series of new laws in the 1913 legislature that was unmatched…in American history…twenty-five bills, entirely recasting the labor law” (Drehle, 2003, p.215). The reformers’ efforts proved fruitful as these great changes were accomplished, and they would forever change the nation for the better.
