This paper is going to tell you about the history of chewing gum. First, who invented chewing gum, what is chewing gum made of, what gives chewing gum it’s flavor and why where the idea that chewing gum might help you concentrate better while taking a test. John B.Curtis invented the first commercial chewing gum in 1848. But it is documented that the first piece of gum is over 9,000 years old. After John B. Curtis introduced chewing gum, several people made chewing gum but the first patent was given to a dentist name William Finley Semple in 1869.
What is chewing gum made of? Chewing gum is made of three different ingredients. The ingredients are Resin, Wax and Elastomer. Resin is the main part you chew, wax softens the gum and elastomer makes it flexible.

Companies that manufacture gum have chemists working in labs to give gum flavor. It is basically adding sugar and different flavors to the gum. The idea is to trap the sweetener and flavoring in the gum so that the flavor stays longer. As you chew, the gum flavoring dissolves in your spit and spreads all over your tongue. Eventually most of the flavoring will slide down your throat with your spit and the great taste becomes irresistible. Gum base doesn’t dissolve in your spit. This is why you lose the the great flavor but not the gum.
