Chariots of fire Reo Aono The Chariots of fire, an award winning movie that was created in the year of 1981, is well known as a movie focusing on the two short distance runners from Britain named Abrahams, an English Jew and Liddell an devout christian born to a Scottish missionary in China. I have chosen to watch and reflect on this movie because I had an interest in knowing the relationship between sports, an activity enjoyed and practiced by people from all religions and races, and religion which separates people by ideas and thoughts on the way of living. My additional reason of why I have chosen to watch this movie is because currently, many sportsmen enjoy the sports activity at a very competitive level despite the fact that all people have different backgrounds and beliefs. I believe that each of the commitment towards religion goes well beyond whatever duty either feels to the society’s expectations, but where Abrahams’s responsibilities lead him from after losing a race to Liddell, is whether he can win. The win to gain recognition. So, he took himself to another level by hiring a coach. For Liddell, who discovers an route to the Olympics that the qualifying heat for his event is on the day he calls the "Sabbath," the crisis is whether he can qualify. The contrast of the two protagonists where Abrahams must forget about his pride and find his courage to run, Liddell had the need to forget about his hopes and dreams and find the courage not to. Since both were very religious, they had different mental attitudes to approach the “win” in the olympics and overall, lead the two of them to gain recognition.
