Throughout the entire novel we see examples of theme, setting, and character development. The setting takes place in a dystopia which contributed to the theme of ignorance vs. awareness. This is because of the people being influenced to live a life full of crudeness versus the people on the outside who can apprehend the truth of this dystopia. Characters and their development is a very important part of what build up the novel and what makes it interesting. Guy Montag is an excellent example of character development because his role completely changes throughout the book. At first can be viewed as an antagonist because he burns books for pleasure, but later we learn he becomes the leading protagonist. Clarisse McClellan played an enormous role in changing Montag’s thought process and sparking a curiosity in him is just a few examples of character development. A major event occurs when Montag is sent to set fire to a house full of books with a problem of a women not cooperating and not leaving her house. When time comes Montag and his fellow firefighters are forced to burn her along with her books. This event causes a major shift in what he believes and causes him to put everything into question. Paragraph one Montag states that “ It was a pleasure to burn,” (page 1). This ties into character development and irony because it shows his foolishness and his alteration as a character. Later Montag states that suddenly “ the odor of kerosene made him vomit,” (page 47), and this is a major turning point for his character in his transformation.
