1. Topic: style- satirical tone “Do you see these little holes on his arms that appear to be pores?...these holes emit a certain grease that allows our model to slip and slide right through the crop with no trouble at all” (1199). The satirical tone exemplifies the realization of the paradox towards Mexican prejudice; the author satirizes society’s stereotype against Mexicans. Demonstrating how in reality some individuals view Mexican as robots instead of human beings alike to them. The author criticizes the label of a farmworker and in thus shows how society may perceive Mexican as only being good for fieldwork. Also, Los Vendidos was written around the time frame that Cesar Chavez sparked the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee; in which he and others fought for the rights of Farmers and against the oppression Chicanos faced. The author ridicules how society belittled Mexicans and exploited and enslaved them because of imbecilic reasons; such as lack of education, language, and skin color. 2. Topic: style- understatement “I’m a secretary from Governor Reagan’s office, and we’re looking for a Mexican type for the administration...not too dark...perhaps beige” (1198). The author highlights the Latino stereotypes and their effects on those stereotyped and on society. By carrying out a satirical tone, the author is able to manifest how Mexicans are treated; thus, achieving this through the secretary’s rejection of each character represented. The satirical tone elucidates on how people may acknowledge their own prejudices and comprehend how Mexicans feel. Through the Mexican-American character, the author makes it clearly evident of an attempt to end prejudice in itself.
