ALCOHOLISM IS DEADLY Was Poe one of the greatest authors? His stories were so deep and expressed what he felt without directly saying it. Edgar Allan Poe was a sad lonely man, he was a great writer, but his attitude in life was very poor. His loved ones died when he was very young, and it lead him to start drinking. Poe’s death remains a mystery, but it is most likely that Poe died of alcoholism because he turned into a drunk after being abandoned. Poe died from alcoholism, because Dr. Snodgrass’s opinion and Poe’s symptoms of delirium help that theory. “Dr. Snodgrass attributed his death to lethal amount of alcohol.” (Silverman 186). There is evidence that Poe was an alcoholic, which goes against the rabies theory. Poe’s cat did not infect Poe with rabies, because it’s cause of death was not associated with the disease. Poe could not have died of an animal bite or scratch that caused rabies.
