Bipolar disorder; formerly known as manic depression can be defined as a mental disorder marked by alternating periods of elation and depression. This disorder has a substantial effect on an individual's mood. If the individuals are not taking their medication as advised by their respected doctor then the disorder can consume their life. People who suffer from this disorder have a hard time with regulating their emotions. A bipolar episode can last for about a week for an individual, but with the proper steps they can keep their actions, and emotions in check. These medical conditions can disrupt every aspect of a person and their family’s lives. Mental disorders do not discriminate; age, sex, or color does not matter when it comes to mental illness. Many people live with different types of mental health problems. These problems can be anxieties, drug or alcohol addiction, obsessive compulsive disorder, and personality and mood disorders. People can suffer from one or more of these conditions. There are treatment options available but unfortunately treatable mental illness is being left untreated. Many people feel ashamed or just don’t realize the help available to them. In the past several decades there have been substantial changes in the care for those with mental disorders but even with all the technology, science and a better understanding of what mental illness is, improvement of the lives of those with a mental illness still falls short. Bipolar Disorder can be classified by the occurrence of manic episodes followed by hypomanic or major depressive episodes. A manic episode is a distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, extensive, or irritable mood and abnormally and persistently increased goal-directed activity or energy, lasting at least 1 week and present most of the day, nearly every day. During the specific period of mood disturbance and increased energy or activity, many symptoms are present. Some examples of these symptoms can include: -Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity, decreased need for sleep, and are more talkative than usual (“Bipolar and Related Disorders, “n.d.). As the level of stress goes up, so does the risk for several health complications including those related to mental health. Wells, Klap, Koike, and Sherbourne (2001) conducted a study examining the disparities in mental health care among black, Hispanic, and white Americans. Of those Hispanics in the study (n=617), 16.6% of them had a probable mental disorder compared to 13.4% of whites (n=7,299). Hispanics also had a higher incidence of substance abuse problems with 9% of those surveyed meeting criteria compared to 7.6% of whites. Hispanics also had the least reported perceived need for treatment with 10.4% for mental health and only 1.3% for substance abuse. Medications are a major part of treating bipolar disorder however, they can be dangerous especially in children. In the video Rebecca Riley died due to overdose of untested drugs. Many children who are diagnosed with bipolar disorder are put on multiple medications. This is because one medication may cause side effects that may need another medication to subdue that side effect. Many will need antipsychotics as well as antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications. Psychologist also can’t determine a proper dosage or treatment of medication without experimenting. Basically psychologist have to use their best guess and see how the child’s behavior changes. Many of the research on the effect medications have on mental disorders is based on results from adult trials. As stated previously many children with severe bipolar disorder are prescribed many medications at one time even without full research on the side effects. The study however, noted a decrease in medication use when using psychoeducational psychotherapy programs. The goal of these programs is to inform and allow families to take a more active role in medication management. Based on the article it does state that medication is quite us full in treating mood disorders contrary to what was stated in the video. The video stated that medications may not work well or at all with children. At some point in order to expand research on medications drug companies needed incentive. Culture, religion, and vulnerable populations with various beliefs are what make this nation a diverse country. These different groups affect the various populations in which health care occasionally or routinely come across. Awareness, respect, and consideration are substantial factors that play a significant role in the overall treatment and care for patients of diverse groups. Vulnerable populations encompass a wide variety of people whom are often seen and treated in health care facilities. One major vulnerable population are those with mental illness.
