Holden on to Jane Communication is vital to one’s mental health; isolation leads one tumbling down a one-way road to depression. Viewing J.D. Salinger’s character of Holden in The Catcher in the Rye from the perspective of a psychologist leads readers to inquire all sorts of theories as to why Holden fell into such a deep depression. Besides the fact that Holden is a teenage boy who lacks communication skills, he is also emotionally dense. The psychologist (who in this case is the readers) is left wondering how Holden’s story might alter had he, just once, met a person he could connect with. And if so, would he be okay? She is known for being the girl who “wouldn’t move any of her kings” (31). The kings in checkers are meant to help a player win the game. Most people, when getting a king will use it immediately to their advantage. Jane “just left them in the back row” because “she liked the way they looked” there(32). Holden represents the kings that Jane always kept in the back. Although he is hardly capable of taking care of himself, time after time, Holden remains devoted to Jane and wishes to protect her. Which is also why he stays up late waiting for Stradlater to come back from the date. Holden was just “so damn worried” about Jane losing her innocence (32). We see this care in Holden again when he describes the day when he and Jane were playing checkers on the front porch when her stepdad came outside and asked about cigarettes. Soon after, Jane cries. Holden tries to comfort her and they even kiss, but Jane is reserved and doesn’t confide in Holden. He attempts to reach out to Jane, but he still has a problem connecting her. He perseverates so much over saving and preserving her that he cannot connect with her intimately. Holden also resembles the kings that Jane keeps in the back because Jane cares about Holden on a deeper level than physical attraction. She holds off after kissing Holden because keeping him “in the back row” instead of using him to win means that he is special to
