Recommended: Micro and macro sociology theory

Using the micro, mezzo, and macro levels of conceptualization we can understand some of the interactions that Brenda’s family is having with the enviroment. This type of conceptualization helps take into perspective multiple angles of Brenda’s life and its interaction with the enviroment. At the micro level we can understand that Brenda is from a poor Puerto Rican family. Brenda’s mother, Delia, suffers from a mental health issue but it is not being addressed appropriately because of their beliefs they understand that she is possessed by an evil spirit. We can observe how this unresolved issues brings a lot of fear, stress, and frustration to the entire family, above all Brenda because she has been targeted by Delia’s situation and beliefs.

    He is able to do this task by using rhetorical techniques. One of the most common rhetorical device that he used throughout the whole book was pathos. Pathos is a literary device that is used to evoke emotion or pity from an audience. The author uses pathos to deliver heart-breaking and thought provoking examples from the story to make readers wonder about what life on “the other side” is really like. A specific scene where pathos is used was when the book talked about the monetary situation of the mother, LaJoe, and the scene said “The $931 she (LaJoe) received each month off welfare and food stamps…$400 for groceries, $80 for burial insurance…”(95). This example of pathos is extremely effective as this scene shocks readers with the fact that the mother uses nearly 10% of her monthly income to just be insured that her children are insured for burial if they are ever killed. This example evokes the audience by making them imagine of how tough of a situation LaJoe was in and how terrifying it must be worrying everyday whether or not her children could be dead at any moment. It shows the audience that nothing is guaranteed in the ghetto. This is very good at achieving the author’s goal of presenting this subject because this example shows to the readers how many people in these parts of the cities are scared of their own homes and safety.

    In order to understand the current situation of Puerto Ricans one must look at their history and retrace the sequence of events that led to the current formation of the Puerto Rican people. An important component of this history is the time Puerto Rico spent under Spanish rule. Studying this portion of Puerto Rican history forces us to acknowledge the contribution the Spaniards, European immigrants, and African slaves had on Puerto Rican identity as we consider it today. In the article Gonzales points out what he feels is a disregard toward the African contribution to the Puerto Rican identity. He argues that the first Puerto Ricans were black , based on his interpretation that Africans were the first group to come to Puerto Rico and reproduce who did not have ties to a "motherland" because they were slaves. This is unlike the Spaniard elites and Criolles that demonstrated their commitment and loyalty to Spain. Since they had no other place to go, Puerto Rico was their motherland. Gonzalez also points out that the culture of a region is always the culture of the elite, not the popular culture.
