Carter was born in West Virginia in 1875 and was the oldest of nine siblings. In addition, he was motivated to get a good education to help support his family and thus educated himself until he was accepted into high school at age 20. He finished high school in two years and went on to college, where he also finished college in two years. He was the second African-American to earn a doctorate from Harvard University! Throughout the years of his education from graduating from college and becoming a teacher, principal, and supervisor of schools; he felt that the history of African-Americans was neglected in schools.
