Carson McCullers: a tree, a rock, a cloud Georgia born southern gothic writer Carson McCullers portrays a world that everyone experiences but most deny. Through her works of literature Carson McCullers reveals that all throughout america people fight loneliness. During the 1900’s it wasn’t a shocker that people were introverted, they all had secrets or were bedridden from illness. Loneliness is displayed in McCullers’ short story “a tree, a rock, a cloud”. To understand Carson McCullers’ reason for her theme throughout her works, one must know about her past life and what lead up to her writing her short story. On February 19 in 1917, Lula Carson Smith was born in columbus, Georgia to a jeweler named Lamar Smith and Marguerite Waters. Carson had a younger brother, named lamar jr., and a sister, named Marguerite. From the age of ten Carson took piano lessons, then at the age of fifteen she was gifted a typewriter to promote her story writing by her father. Carson graduated from columbus high school. The paperboy, age twelve, enters the coffee shop owned by a grump named leo. In the shop their are workers and a man leaning over a beer seemingly drunk. As the boy turns to walk out of the cafe, the drunk man calls him over and grabs his chin then tells the boy he loves him. This earns a laugh from the workers on the cafe, the man proceeds to tell the boy he can explain. The man shows the boy two pictures of a woman whose face is blurry. When asked who she was the man explains that the woman was his wife. The man tells the boy that she left him and that he searched for her for almost three years. He realized that love was science and started to experiment with it. He explains he started to try love small things. The man told the boy he had to love the small things first.
