In Carl Yost’s article entitled, “2014 MARKET TRENDS: IN HEALTHCARE DESIGN, PATIENTS RULE” he explains that the affordable care act has influenced healthcare quite a bit especially in outpatient care. It has pushed designers to build smaller care facilities because they are easier to build and operate and tend to be more convenient. Healthcare facilities recently have added spaces for outpatient care and medical research such as “collaborative lounges where researchers can informally collaborate, as well as atriums where they can mix with the patients whose lives they are impacting” (Yost, YEAR) This is an example of how workplace design has had a great influence on healthcare design because it’s providing areas to collaborate different areas of the hospital (Yost). For many years healthcare spaces have been designed with a hotel look in mind but about 10-15 years ago that changed to “focusing more on personalization, service and interaction with the staff.” (Yost) Researchers have also found that any access that can be made to nature and daylight in the facilities is often found to be calming to the patients. As a result more effort and focus is being put into integrating landscaping and views of the surrounding area.
