Caritas is a Catholic Church organisation that utilises the Catholic social teachings in their work to aid the less fortunate. Their actions are reflected in the Catholic social teachings such as solidarity, the common good and preferential option for the poor. Solidarity is the inclusion of all people in a community, regardless of any differences. Caritas displays solidarity by reaching out to marginalised people, for example, they responded when rival groups in South Sudan had a dispute. Many civilians were forced to leave their homes, therefore Caritas assisted by providing support such as blankets and cooking supplies. Another Catholic social teaching is preferential option for the poor, which focuses on showing care or support to the poor or underprivileged people. Caritas shows this by reaching out to remote areas with programs to help them achieve a better future. One of the main Caritas programs include Project Compassion which raises awareness for the poor by fundraising and promoting justice for those less fortunate. As of the 28th of May 2018, Project Compassion has raised $7,073,456 which goes towards assisting those in need, such as providing a box of supplies to children at the Matuba Children’s Centre in Mozambique. Eileen was born into a devout Catholic family and would often turn to her religion for alleviation when she felt discouraged by the lack of normal childhood preoccupations due to her spinal injury. Eileen also accepted and endured her suffering for the good of others, which can be seen in her work with the ‘Brown Sisters’ where she nursed the poor and sick. This demonstrates Eileen's priestly values as prayer and worship were at the heart of her life while she endured intense pain to help those in need. Eileen also displayed prophetic values due to her determination and desire to help others no matter how much her disability restricted her. This can be seen when she was unable to help the ‘Brown Sisters’ physically, however, she still found a way to assist by making phone calls to arrange the order’s works. Not only did Eileen devote her time to the poor, she also provided strong leadership and direction due to her commitment to the ‘Brown Sisters’. This demonstrates kingly values as she used her power and influence to develop an organisation that advocates care for the poor and disadvantaged which has continued in her legacy.
