During the 1930s, many Americans were forced to move West towards California in search of employment opportunity. This journey was often thousands of miles, making it difficult for families to bring their possessions with them; Americans could only take what they could fit in their car. Since they had limited space, migrants could only take objects that had significant value. Due to the lack of space and high value an object must have to be kept by a moving family, a going away gift had to be meaningful and small; a CD containing specific songs matches these two requirements. The CD for the Joad family has thirteen songs, one for each member of the family. Though all of the family member, and Casy, could listen to every song, there is one song specifically for each person.

“Love in LA” is a short story written by Dagoberto Gilb. The story is written in third person point of view. The author is an American writer that writes extensively. He was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. His mother came from across the Mexican border, yet his father is from Kentucky. Gilb’s parents were also raised in parts of Los Angeles. His mother’s home was in Downtown, while his father resided in Boyle Heights. His parents’ careers were vastly different his mother was a model and later a dental assistant, while his father made a living off of an industrial laundry business. When he was a child, his parents divorced, and he remained living with his mother. After Gilb graduated high school he went to multiple community colleges, then he transferred to the University of California. He majored in Philosophy and Religious Studies. Before Dagoberto became the prominent writer he is now he worked in many construction-like jobs. His writing career began when he was inspired by Raymond Carver who was near his school teaching others.
A Mad Girl’s Love Song In Sylvia Plath’s poem “A Mad Girl’s Love Song”, it is hard to determine whether the speaker is mad or going mad. Plath, along with all women in this time period, were defined by their relationship to a man. When a woman was abandoned by her beloved, it was Earth-shattering, as it still can be for many women today. Before the reader even gets into the poem itself, the speaker is already described as “mad” and this word has multiple connotations.
The old mother in “Tuesday Siesta” was soft spoken and gentle whereas the mother in “The Stolen Party” was more abrupt, harsh and unrefined. The mother in “Tuesday Siesta spoke to her daughter, the priest and his sister very calmly, even though there were times throughout the story that her tone of her words got more harsh but the tone and volume of her voice did not change. “It was a brief and self-assured reply, but her voice remained pleasant, full of undertones” (Marquez 373). During this situation, the mother was getting agitated that the priest had said for them to come back after three. Her and her daughter had spent so long traveling and she was not about to turn all the way back home, without visiting her sons grave. On the other hand, the mother from “The Stolen Party” was abrupt and harsh. Her daughter was invited to the birthday party of her mothers’ employer. She was a maid. The mother was none too impressed with her daughter wanting to go to the party because she knew her daughter would be treated different then everyone else. “… The problem with you, young lady, is that you like to fart higher than your ass” (Heker 27). Released in 2000, and called the "…love story of the new millennium" (Time Out New York), In the Mood for Love (2000) is one of the best and most underrated foreign film. From its nostalgic depiction of the 1960s to its artistically appealing cinematography, this film has become a staple in the ever evolving, fast-paced film industry. Consequently, after having watched it I was in a daze for days, day dreaming about the characters, reimaging their fates, this movie could not leave me. I wouldn’t let it. Furthermore, I was more inclined to analyze In the Mood for Love after having watched another Wong Kar Wai masterpiece, Chung King Express (1994), because the resonating power both these films have had on me are immensely powerful. It is extremely rare when a filmmaker has the ability to really leave a mark on your life, twice. The film, In the Mood for Love is produced under the shroud of the Hong Kong New Wave movement (1978-2000), in particularly the Second Wave. This film movement analyzes major social issues grappling Hong Kong such as decolonization, social class, and the importance of women in a rising global economy. As a result the following analysis will chronicle the details of the Hong Kong Second Wave film movement, along with a detailed description of Wong Kar Wai’s film aesthetics, and a deep evaluation of the acclaimed movie, In the Mood for Love.
Rap music has given me personally something to look up to. Cole. He clearly understands how there is “beauty in the struggle and ugliness in the success” because he’s lived that life. Other songs such as “2Face” or “The Autograph” were instantly relatable to me because he has been through several struggles from the beginning of his childhood. Cole’s father left when he was six leaving his mother and younger brother alone. Cole became “the man of the house” but becoming a rapper is not as easy as it seems. In, “Skinny Love,” Bon Iver employs powerful imagery and disappointed allusions to convey the idea that impure love becomes a vicious cycle of misery. Vernon’s use of allusions clearly show how impure love is destructive. The repetition of the word “my” in the song (Vernon, lines 3, 7, and 19) exemplifies the disappointment and hurt of the speaker.
