It’s significant that the book begins with the line “Call me Ishmael,” because it tells the readers that Ishmael doesn’t see himself as a person anymore, just a story. He only sees himself as a story because of what happened and isn’t sure who “Ishmael” really is. According to the ancient philosopher Aristotle, the good life is when a person can grow, reproduce, use energy, move, use perception, reason, and maintain good relationships. Aristotle's Good Life tells us that Captain Ahab isn’t living a good life. Captain Ahab can’t maintain a friendship without doing something to act crazy or push them away, and does not have reason in his life, meaning he doesn’t think about the consequences or repercussions that his decision have; he has one thing on his mind and it’s to get Moby Dick. We see defiance all throughout the book, especially with Captain Ahab.He believes that since he is the Captain of the Pequod that his actions have no repercussions and that the crew will have to do what he says, even if it’s going against whaling rules, against rules on the sea, and against the things they were taught. One example from the book is when Captain Ahab and Starbuck get into an argument over what Captain Ahab is doing. Starbuck believes that Captain Ahab is going to bring down the crew with him just because of Ahab's need for revenge and Starbuck tells the crew that Ahab isn’t a good commander for the Pequod. The second example is that Captain Ahab has a tough time with authority, we see this towards the middle and end of the book. He doesn’t care about what the people who own the ship will think of his actions or what he is leading the crew to do. He believes that he is the only person who matters, and is going to get Moby Dick even if God, nature, and his crew tell him not
