Introduction The Caldecott Medal was named after the illustrated Randolph Caldecott and is given each year to a book that represented the most distinguished American picture book for children. The first theme that the princess points out is that there is a time for rebirth in everything. Just like flowers dies and come back into blossom, so does the moon. I felt that the illustrations did a great job at representing this theme because on the cover page of the book the colors are dark and deep. This is before the princess gets sick. However, the illustration of the characters never contradict the text, but instead give support to what is written. Another thing that I found interesting is that a lot of the characters are looking to the right. This pulls our attention to the next page and keeps us moving through the plot. Finally, I feel that the mood is set most strongly by the colors the illustrator chose to use. The primary colors are the only ones that are used. However, when the king is mad, there is more red used. When the princess was sick there were darker tones that help the mood feel
