William Shakespeare wrote 37 plays in his life, with his best and most famous being Romeo and Juliet. This play is over 450 years old and since then has been made into a movie over 25 times and performed all around the world. Through the wide variety of themes, Romeo and Juliet still appeals to teenagers in the 21st century. Adolescents can still relate to 3 themes in Romeo and Juliet: relationships, parental control, and bullying, which applies to teenagers in the 16th century and the 21st century.

Bulling is a big part of the Romeo and Juliet play, and applies to adolescents both 450 years ago and the now. Bullying takes different forms and happens in different places as well as between the Montagues and Capulet when they threaten each other and attack each other, instead of physical bullying now there is more cyber bullying with teenagers attaching other adolescents on social media and other sites. Bullying in Romeo and Juliet is encapsulated in (Act 1, scene 1, lines 39-59) SAMPSON; Nay, as they dare. I will bite my thumb at them; which is a disgrace to them, if they bear it. Shakespeare has captured Sampson bullying and intimidating Abram with Sampson biting his thumb at Abram. Teenagers not talking to their parents is common 450 years ago and now, with Romeo not telling Lady Capulet where he is at all times. In the opening scene of the Romeo is nowhere to be seen in the shootout and when lady Capulet comes she does not know where Romeo is because he hasn’t talked to her. O, where is Romeo?
