By the age of 65, the average person has seen approximately 2 million television commercials. (Herr, 2001). This is an incredible number of attempts to persuade potential consumers therefore how do companies make their commercials stand out amongst each other. Recalling my personal favorite commercials, billboards, and radio ads, I assumed would be hard, but truly wasn’t. Out of the many funny and interesting commercials I have seen, Budweiser has had the most long-lasting impressions on my memory. I vividly remember the three frogs sitting on a lily pads outside of a bar grunting, “Bud-weis-er”. Another great Budweiser commercial was from a Super Bowl ad campaign. Once in the kitchen, not in sight of his date, he starts to dance in excitement of “getting some”, without realizing he has shook up the beers. After doing his “I’m going to getting some” dance, the young gentlemen hand his date her beer, she then proceeds to open the beer only to have it explored into her face. Researchers have suggested that program-commercial congruency is most effective when viewer involvement is moderate (McClung et al.,1985; Park & McClung, 1986). I believe this is the reason the Budweiser commercials have made such a long-lasting impression on my memory. I vibrantly remember repeating the “Bud-weis-er” grunts as an adolescent just as the frogs did and I still do the “I’m going to get some” dance as an inside joke. I think commercials are very effective when directed at the right demographics. Today commercials are geared more towards direct crowds or individuals and are more internet based than traditionally before. If commercials can direct or shape an individual’s decision/emotion to purchase a service or product, then why doesn’t Americans or in specific black Americans trust that television can inheritably shape an individual’s thought process regardless if the image is positive or
