Brooch Descriptive Writing

The brooch is elegant and majestic. It is in the shape of an owl sitting gracefully on a branch. Detailed and colourful, it is as interesting to look at as the life it has lived. Belonging once to my grandma, the owl is old now – and sleepy. Her eyebrows sit heavily over her beautiful eyes, bright like little diamonds despite the brooch’s age. She is midnight blue and has deep pink flowers in the middle of her body; “Look at me”, she seems to say, “I am beautiful.” Green leaves accompany the flowers on her breast plumes, like friends, whilst her eyebrows and the branch she rests on sit apart from the rest of the brooch giving it a three dimensional effect and bringing it to life. I had admired it for as long as I could remember, whether it was pinned on to my Gran’s scabby fur coat or resting on her dressing table. My mum once told me that when I was a baby I would point to it any time Gran was wearing it and she would say to me, “that’s my wee owl”, to which I would nod as though this was a very important statement that I understood. As I got older I began to find the contrast between the elegant brooch and shabby fur coat amusing, and it made my Gran all the more endearing to me. When she died, I insisted on having it. I was in her house a few days after her death and it was a sombre occasion. I blinked back tears and sat on my hands before finally asking my Grandad if I could go upstairs to find the
