Ship-Trap Island is a long dreaded place. Rainsford is a hunter that falls off his boat into a rocky sea wakes up in late day on the shore of Ship-Trap island. On the island, is an immense jungle and a Death Swamp. Night was trying to see “through a blanket”. The sea broke upon the rocky shore. On the island there was an enormous building on a high bluff. General Zaroff welcomed Rainsford but later threw him out into the vast jungle to be hunted. Rainsford travelled around the island fighting for his life. Around the jungle and swamp, Rainsford set three traps for General Zaroff. One was called the Malay Mancatcher. He balanced a dead tree on a living tree. One the trigger was set off; the dead tree fell on the shoulder of the general. The second one was the Burmese Tiger Pit. He dug a large hole and filled it with stakes, then covered the hole with grass. One of the dogs died in the pit. His final trap was one he learned in Uganda. He tied a knife to the end of a young tree and tied it back with a plant. The knife killed Ivan. After he finished his final trap, Rainsford ran to the edge of the cliffs and jumped off into the rocky ocean. The island was a “God-Forsaken Place” that was whispered about and its name was known as evil among seafaring men. Rainsford was immediately on guard the minute he entered the island. It was gloomy and deathly dark. Words like blackness, night, evil, and “like a wounded snake” are used, creating a dark mood. The author in this novel has very subtly used the settings to build up the atmosphere of adventure and suspense. For example, ‘Damall’s island rested on stone, Boulders edged the island, and rose up out of the ground in unexpected places all across it. the harbor beach was made up of stones as sharp as shells, as if a giant had brought his hammer down on the boulders, and shattered them. (page 3-4)’.This description of Damall’s island instantly makes the readers visualize the island and makes them curious to carry on. The mention of the stones and the boulders shows the ruggedness of the terrain and at the same time implies the hard life that the boys have to live there. In both film and story, Rainsford expresses his lack of sympathy for his prey. Similar to the story, Rainsford meets Ivan first and can’t get through to him and then, he’s greeted by Zaroff. In the film, Zaroff knows that Rainsford is a famous hunter and has read his books, just like in the story. Moreover, Zaroff reveals that a cape buffalo gave him the scar on his head. In the same manner, Zaroff tells Rainsford how he stocks his island with human prey. Just as the film showed Zaroff has a room filled with human heads, and that’s also mentioned in the story. Furthermore, Rainsford uses the same traps (Malay Mancatcher, Burmese Tiger Pit, and a native Uganda Trick) in the film as he did in the story. When world renowned hunter, Sanger Rainsford ends up marooned on an island, he finds himself in an unimaginable word. A world full of murder. He must find a way to save himself and the ones around him. Rainsford is the lesser of two evils he may have a passion for hunting but unlike General Zaroff he has limits, Rainsford kills Zaroff to save himself and many future victims.
In the story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell the protagonist, Sanger Rainsford, is a very resourceful person. When Rainsford is thrown overboard his ship he finds himself in a rather odd predicament. He meets a man who he discovers hunts humans for sport. He quickly learns that he will be the next quarry of this man. While on the run he must use his survival skills to stay alive. “With fingers flying he wove a rough carpet of weeds and branches and then he covered the mouth of the pit” (Connell 56). Some people you meet can have a major impact on your life and change it for better or for worse. Rainsfords (a man who likes to hunt dangerous animals) life was greatly changed in both a good way and a bad way by a man who lives on a tiny island in a big house named General Zaroff. Rainsford ended up on this island after he fell of a yacht he was on to go hunt an animal somewhere else but ended up swimming his way up to the shore of an island. But after about a day of being on the island Rainsford was being hunted down. While Rainsford was trying his hardest to survive on the island he was on he found a way to escape to the mainland where General Zaroff was to try and get a way off the island back to civilization. The points in this story will be somehow related to my thesis statement in ¨The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Zaroff teaches Rainsford how it feels to be like the hunted and not the hunter.
We are introduced to the protagonist and main character, Sanger Rainsford who is a big game hunter and a WW1 veteran. The story starts off with a conversation between Whitney and Rainsford discussing the island, so we can understand the reputation it holds.
When Rainsford falls off of the boat, he has to try his best to stay afloat until he can find something to latch on to. He swims vigorously until he reaches Ship-Trap Island. "Jagged crags appeared to jut up into the opaqueness... dense jungle came down to the very edge of the cliffs." It is midday and he is just searching for a place to rest when he runs into Ivan, the astonishingly large guard of the island. Zaroff, the owner of the island, joins in on their conversation about hunting. The conversation is interesting to say the least. Zaroff says, "You'll find this game worth playing…your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value, eh?" Zaroff is trying to point out that he finds interest in hunting humans, and he wants to know if Rainsford will rise to the challenge. Rainsford is left with a choice to make; will he fight Zaroff, or will he decline and get killed by Ivan. The choice in this situation is pretty self- evident.
Connell was able to make the water of the Caribbean feel as if it were a truly spooky. By using descriptive words such as eerie, dark, and blood-warm, Connell is able to portray how creepy the sea was. While Rainsford was on the island the tone inclines as too if this was a horror story. The island is described as basically a frightening jungle including a deadly swamp and quicksand as possible threats. The castle is viewed as a haunted house, with blood-thirsty hounds keeping Zaroff company. However, no matter how spooky this all truly sounds the suspense is what really keeps the reader involved, provoking his / hers imagination. This keeps the reader interested in what’s happening and keeps them wondering what will come next. Connell makes sure to keep us guessing as to what will occur next with Rainsford throughout the hunting game played with Zaroff. Finally we learn that Rainsford wins the game by surviving for three days on the island. Here the reader could perceive that thought that the story is over, but it isn’t. Rainsford then challenges Zaroff to a fight to the death; however, this is not included in the story. We can imply that Rainsford won the fight by Connell using including this statement, “He had never slept in a better bed, Rainsford decided.” (Paragraph 208). This goes to show that Rainsford has won the challenge against Zaroff and despite of all the
In conclusion, we can assume that Golding was trying to use religious and war motifs as well as the themes of civilization versus savagery to illustrate the decay the island from good to evil, the reader can use Golding’s selection of words and description to deduce the way in which the island was becoming: rotten and vicious. This further on builds on Golding’s idea of mankind’s evil nature – the thematic epicentre of the novel.
After the boys crash on the island, their immediate reaction to the island is its beauty. The weather on the island was hot and humid, without a breeze. The look of the “dazzling beach and the water” (Golding) is unlike anything they have ever seen. The island was superior in their eyes as “The boys find themselves in a tropical paradise: bananas, coconuts, and other fruits are profusely available.” (Slayton) There was no fear and an instant commodore due to the circumstance. However, after becoming comfortable, a natural fear of the unknown begins to settle “as if it wasn’t a good island” (Golding) and they find themselves faced with an entity named, The Beast. This dark fear comes back to haunt them later.
I have read the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell. In this story, Rainsford was thrown from his ship, and wound up on Ship-Trap island. There he meets General Zaroff. He is an unusual character who likes to hunt. His main game just so happens to be people. Rainsford is put against him and has to survive three days in the wild avoiding Zaroff. He uses his skills to try and beat him at his game.
General Zaroff was a war general who escaped to the caribbeans. He found pleasure in killing others as a sport. In WW1 the Russians were killing the Germans and Austrians. This could have triggered why Zaroff likes and thinks killing others is okay. “So I bought this island, built this house, and here I do my hunting. The island is perfect for my purposes—there are jungles with a maze of traits in them, hills, swamps […]". During this time no one owned the Caribbean's so for him this was a good place to live and continue his killing streak. There are many ways to trap victims in the jungle like dead-ends, pouncing, and booby traps. In WW1 they used many of these techniques and more like a pit of spears or gun traps. A murderer, loving to see people in pain from the suffering of dying or getting injured, creating a hole with sharps stakes for people to fall into, and feeding a powerful person to hounds. He is no more obsessed with hunting animals, but hunting humans. This man is now the general of Ship Trap Island. Rainsford becomes the next general of Ship Trap Island. He becomes the next general of the island because he has a similar outlook on life as General Zaroff , and he has changed from not wanting to hunt humans to wanting to hunt humans.
