Breast Cancer Pink Ribbon The breast cancer ribbon has a powerful symbolic meaning. Almost everyone is either directly affected by breast cancer or knows someone who is. The vicious disease shows no mercy which makes the ribbon so much more important. This semiotic device is extremely significant because cancer is the second highest cause of death in the United States (Girard). The pink ribbon is known worldwide for being tied to breast cancer awareness. Awareness is effective because people remember the pink ribbon. It represents strength, hope, and brings people together to fight for a cure. One little pink ribbon has the power to promote awareness and bring people together to fight together. Millions of dollars have been raised to find a cure, and education has been put in place for research on about symptoms and treatments available to reduce the stigma of cancer (October). Different colored ribbons stand for different types of cancer, but the most commonly known ribbon is the pink ribbon. Pink is a good color for the movement because it is tied to universal love of oneself and of others. Also, the color can be associated with peace, friendship, and harmony. Pink can be identified as sweet, cute, nice, playful, romantic, charming, and feminine, which makes sense because the color is seen in bubble gum, cotton candy, flowers, and on babies and little girls. The color is especially popular during October because that is the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The special month dedicated to the awareness, and the color pink, that has brought attention to the campaign, has allow people to reduce the stigma of breast cancer by educating women on possible symptoms and treatment that are available for them. These campaigns have positively benefited our society and have made free or low-cost services possible.
Susan G Komen for the Cure is a very well know charity that raises funds for breast cancer. They host walks, sell merchandise, educate, and sponsor events. Every year they raise millions of dollars for research and to support those who have breast cancer. The charity originated in 1982 when Nancy G Brinker started it in honor of her sister Susan. Susan Passed away from breast cancer in 1980 and the charity was a part of Nancy’s promise to Susan that she would put a stop to breast cancer. For a long time Susan G Komen for the Cure has been considered one of the best cancer related charities there is, but lately it has come under fire.
The pink ribbons on Faiths cap represent faith and playfulness. This is kind of ironic considering her name is Faith and the pink ribbons also mean faith. Faith's pink ribbons are the symbol for the good in the story and show that there is faith with Goodman Brown. "Faith! Faith!" cried the husband. "Look up to Heaven, and resist the Wicked One!" In the first paragraph, it is described as “Faith, as the wife was aptly named, [who] thrust her own pretty head into the street, letting the wind play with the pink ribbons of her cap while she called to Goodman Brown” (310). As one can see, Faith is described as a pretty woman, who is possibly young because young girls usually wear ribbons. Children are known for their innocence and purity, so perhaps these ribbons represent this idea. The author repeatedly mentions her ribbons throughout the story, pointing towards a significant meaning. In the middle of Young Goodman Brown’s expedition in the forest, he explains that “But something fluttered lightly down through the air and caught on the branch of the tree. The young man seized it, and beheld a pink ribbon. ‘My Faith is gone...There is no good on earth; and sin is but a name. Come, devil; for to thee is this world given.’” (315) Goodman Brown discusses the devil and exclaims how nothing is just in this world. The ribbon fluttering down from the sky suggests that Faith has lost her purity and has turned to sin. This seems a little paranoid, as Goodman Brown assumes that his wife resorted to transgression. In fact, this paranoia is more exposed when he is talking to himself and saying things like “Faith! Faith…Look up to heaven, and resist the wicked one.”
It develops the characters and helps the novel go deeper. One of the largest symbols that stays constant throughout the entire book is that of the red rose. After Doctor’s death, Pasha plants a red rose bush outside Zari’s house. The neighborhood interprets it in different ways, saying, “Red is the color of passion and the color of revolution. Red is also the color of love. And the color of blood”(Seraji 146). The symbolism behind the red rose bush varies between all of these explanations, but mostly represents a passive resistance. He plants the rose bush after Zari’s Whether Pasha plants the rose bush out of love and mourning or rebellion is unknown. The two subjects are more similar than they seem,so he probably meant both. Another use of the symbol of the red rose is with the rebellion leader Golesorkhi. During his trial he says, “This court is an illegal institution. The Shah is a tyrant, a servant of the Americans, and a puppet of the West”(Seraji, 31). He is a man who stands for what he believes in and does not give in to the Savak’s wish for him to beg for forgiveness. His name means “red rose” which symbolizes his passion and the rebellion he believes in. He himself is basically a symbol representing all of what Doctor and other revolutionaries are striving for. Doctor uses Golesorkhi to even do his own small rebellion by painting the red roses the night after Golesorkhi’s death. Zari also incorporates the symbolism of the red rose when she takes action to make a big statement. Right before she sets herself on fire she says, “I’m lighting a candle for Doctor. Today is the fortieth day of his death. I love you”(Seraji 215). The significance of her defiance can not be overlooked, as she does it straight from her heart. Cancer is a deadly disease that millions of people die from a year. Many loved ones are killed with little to no warning affecting families across our world. My family happened to be one that was affected by this atrocious disease. This event changed the way my family members and I viewed cancer.
...in to treat African American women as a whole instead of patient X, then there will be a change in the rate of deaths among African American women with breast cancer. However, these women must also decide to trust those providers and receive pre-screenings in order to be proactive about their own health, and the government needs to actively provide affordable ways for women to receive these screenings. There is plenty of evidence available that shows the problems with African American women dying from breast cancer, so people must be educated and aware of the problem in order to bring about a change in society. As Louis Giglio once said, “awareness brings about action, and action brings about change,” and hopefully, people will use this information to bring about awareness to ripple into change for African American women aged 40-80 especially regarding breast cancer.

The American Cancer Society is a volunteer-based organization that is present across the United States. Its main purpose is to raise money and awareness about the severity and prevalence of cancer. Cancer education and research is where most of the focus and monetary donations are used for. The American Cancer Society strives to fulfill their goal of “less cancer and more birthdays” across all generations and populations (ACS Inc., 2011).
Thus, you should donate money and support this foundation because it is one of the top-rated charities in the United States. In any case, this foundation does great things to help people with breast cancer. Contributions to NBCF can help by using the money to provide the mammograms and other programs included in this organization. Financial offerings can help women detect breast cancer and have it treated early. Breast cancer has no cure, but NBCF can allow people to have a chance at life. It would truly help many people if you educated yourself, your friends and your family. Knowledge can mean everything in cancer diagnosis. While watching the film I was extremely anger and frustrated at how people can try and do make a profit off of an issue so devastating. It just shows how capitalism is taking over in a negative way. Additionally, I myself will no longer support the breast cancer movement after watching the film. Furthermore, I do not remember purchasing something with a pink ribbon. Furthermore, I do not agree with the way the movement is aggressively optimistic since it is important for women who do get breast cancer to feel the anger because it is normal to, and it can be a dangerous thing to ignore feelings of anger or suppress one’s anger.
It lets them know that racism, and oppression only women of color face does not mean white women cannot be aware of it and speak out against it. It makes the point that a person does not need to directly experience the oppression in order to know it is not right.
