Susan G Komen for the Cure is a very well know charity that raises funds for breast cancer. They host walks, sell merchandise, educate, and sponsor events. Every year they raise millions of dollars for research and to support those who have breast cancer. The charity originated in 1982 when Nancy G Brinker started it in honor of her sister Susan. Susan Passed away from breast cancer in 1980 and the charity was a part of Nancy’s promise to Susan that she would put a stop to breast cancer. For a long time Susan G Komen for the Cure has been considered one of the best cancer related charities there is, but lately it has come under fire. Many people have begun to question how they use the money they raise. Two of those organizations have been “Mush for a Cure” and “Kites for a Cure”. Mush for a Cure was a sled dog raise that aimed to raise money for breast cancer. After raising about $30,000 for breast cancer they were given a cease and desist letter from Susan G Komen. Though after gaining bad publicity the lawsuit was dropped and “Mush for a Cure” is now trademarked by its organizer. Kites for a Cure was an event put on by the Uniting Against Lung Cancer group. They were also asked to refrain from using the color pink in relation to “cure” despite the group never using pink. In this case the lawsuit continued until an agreement was reached where the event name was allowed to be used in relation to lung cancer events and that the group wouldn’t use pink ribbons. Many people’s donations went to this lawsuit rather than going to finding a cure for breast
