Brave New World vs. 1984 While Brave New World and 1984 are both dynamic dystopian satires written by men who were startled by the changing ways of the 20th century, they differ in their own attributes while maintaining the similar oppressive government both stories are based around. An important aspect from both of the novels is the abolishment of history. This is part of the way The Party (1984) is able to manipulate its citizens. In Brave New World, we see that the majority of people are so artificially content and drowned in irrelevant information that they don’t care what happened before their time- or even a week ago in their own lives. The only mention of “history” is the reference to Henry Ford, a person who has been inaccurately displayed but embraced by the citizens of the New World as a god-like figure. “History is bunk” is quoted from Ford and prophesized throughout the story by Mustapha Mond, the powerful head of state of the New World. …show more content…

Because the people of 1984 are so desperate for any fragment or reminder of the past, they believe the force-fed lies that their government has created in place of actual events. This is the Party’s way to justify their actions in the past or present. With all of the revision of history the government has to do in accordance to their policies, the lies the Party tells their citizens are quite contradictory. Later in the novel, we find out the term for this is known as “doublethink”, which is the ability to believe into two inconsistent thoughts and be able to accept both of them
