In Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, a society is created with traditions in place about how to handle emotions. Solidarity Services are held in order to gather the people of the Brave New World and relive tensions or anxiety. Each participant in a Solidarity Service says, “I drink to my annihilation” (82) because they are in the midst of taking soma, the community’s everyday solution to discomfort or unpleasantness. By annihilating oneself, they are essentially eradicating their conscious personalities from society and taking away their individuality. The first way Aldous Huxley shows the art of happiness is through the World State’s motto, “community, identity, and stability”. Being oneself is the best person one can be. Bernard says “I’d rather be myself. Myself and nasty. Not somebody else, however jolly” (Huxley 89). Bernard gets mocked for being short but he does not want be anybody else, he wants to be himself. Brave New World is a novel about a dystopian society named “The World State” set in A.F. 632 (632 years after Henry Ford’s death). In this society, advanced technology is used to mass produce people and condition them into only wanting and doing certain things, creating a caste system. However, doing so takes away people’s freedom to think for one’s self. Certain people are able to step back from the monotony of this society and because of this, they feel detached. This scenario adds an element of alienation, this scenario poses a question, is it better to be happy or individualistic?

Society maintains their own way of punishment, production of a particular type of person, and causes some to prevent from adapting to its evolving ways.
In Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” by Ursula K. Le Guin, there are many ways that a reader can read these stories and see the differences between them. A further breakdown of both of these stories will show how they both contradict social classes and political ideologies of their time. Brave New World challenges societal structures by presenting the idea that a totalitarian style of government will create the feeling of peace and safety that people are looking for. At the same time “The ones who walk away from Omelas” is challenging political ideologies with what seems as a Utopian society that follows in the steps of a communist style government.
Happy endings to stories are often times pre conceived to mean something considered good -- things such as a romantic kiss confirming mutual love, a heroic “saves the day” moment, or a grand victory in an epic battle. However, the notion that happy endings only spur from sentient fortunate events is a misconceived one; in fact, happy endings can also be moral or spiritual, even if the final act closes with death. In Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, John’s suicide that ends the novel gives him both spiritual reassessment and moral reconciliation as he searches for isolation both for his own sake and for what he believes to be the sake of World State as a whole.

In a world based on the motto “Community, identity, stability,” every aspect of society follows that phrase. In the Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, everyone belongs to everyone else. The people live in one community, follow their pre-destined identity and lead stable lives as a result.
There were quite a few changes made from Aldous Huxley’s, Brave New World to turn it into a “made for TV” movie. The first major change most people noticed was Bernard Marx’s attitude. In the book he was very shy and timid toward the opposite sex, he was also very cynical about their utopian lifestyle. In the movie Bernard was a regular Casanova. He had no shyness towards anyone. A second major deviation the movie made form the book was when Bernard exposed the existing director of Hatcheries and Conditioning, Bernard himself was moved up to this position. In the book the author doesn’t even mention who takes over the position. The biggest change between the two was Lenina, Bernard’s girlfriend becomes pregnant and has the baby. The screenwriters must have made this up because the author doesn’t even mention it. The differences between the book and the movie both helped it and hurt it.
The society in Brave New World has extremely different views and ideals than that of the common western society. In this dystopian world pleasure rules above all to the point where the people are trained from the point of “birth” to seek pleasure as much as possible as well as follow all rules and regulations that fit their caste. Each and every aspect of the people's lives is controlled and watched. To prevent people from having time to think, which could prove disastrous for the Controllers, they are given time-consuming jobs and activities to keep them occupied every waking moment.
