Booth Rental, as defined in Humberto Barreto’s, Ricardian Rent Theory Revisited: A Modern Application and Extension, “the practice of renting out space (or a booth) for a fixed fee to each stylist” (Barreto, 9). Essentially, in most places it is being utilized, it replaces the more traditional methods of payment to stylists: salary, commission, hourly-wages, or some combination of those three (Barreto, 9). In order to grasp a better understanding of what Booth Rental is and how it works, it is important to first establish how it originated. In order to generate higher profits, salon owners constantly compete over higher quality stylists, as superior stylists have a more established relationship with their clientele. Unlike a typical salon, booth rental derives from the stylists. Stylists tend to have strong connections with their clientele due to the fact that hair care requires consistent attention and also the consumer can easily judge the quality of one’s hair (Barreto, 10-11). Due to this, stylists with a strong clientele are in high demand, which leads to an increase in competition, thus ultimately creating a booth rental system. In a booth rental system, the stylist pays a base fee, or rent, to the salon owners, and whatever profits they can generate from this are kept for them. This is beneficial to higher quality stylists with well-established clientele, who are aware that they can generate greater profits from a booth rental system than what they might make on salary, commission, or hourly wage basis.
