Invincible Man “I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with stick and stones.” (Albert Einstein). Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James D. Houston are the authors of Farewell to Manzanar. Jeanne was born in 1934 in Inglewood California. She is the youngest of ten children and a character in the novel. There are twelve main characters and some characters are more notable than others, such as Papa, Mama, Jeanne and Woody. Papa was arrested in the start of novel. After he was arrested, he was in mental confusion. Mama is the best character to represent Japanese woman culture. Kio is Woody’s brother who stands gains this father when his father hits mama. First of all, he showed a great deal of flexibility and was able to adapt himself with his inevitable destiny. He responded to difficult situations in Manzanar by rising above it. For example, when they moved to the camp, he helped his Mama to clean the filthy cabin and gave encouragement to her. Woody Wakatsuki was exiled form his land, but he had a strong attitude in life. He also had a positive mind because he believed that problems were going to diminish and their lives would improve. Jeanne said, “It was hard to get Woody down. He’d keep smiling when everybody else was ready to explode. Grief flickered in his eyes. He blinked it away and hugged her tighter. ‘We’ll make it better, mama. You watch’” (Wakatsuki 26). Woody was a humble son to his family. He has a mild character and is patient and honorable. This is especially true because Woody’s father was not present. Woody, as the oldest son, did his best to protect his family. He was short; she was even shorter under five feet. He said, “‘You Okay mama?’” (Wakatsuki 25). After moving to the cabin, Woody became a very responsible person with a positive attitude. After Woody did not think about anything other than his family. It can be assumed that Woody emerged as a father who tried to protect his family from problems. In the traditional Japanese community, responsibility is essential to a great life.
