Abstract

This paper questions whether or not Bonnie and Clyde were criminals or heroes.

Introduction Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were notorious gangsters during The Great Depression that committed small, petty crimes such as robbery and theft, to larger crimes such as murder. Bonnie and Clyde weren’t just criminals they were also an inseparable couple, and some might even say heroes of their time. When Clyde was arrested Bonnie was his “knight in shining armor” so to speak. According to (Police kill famous outlaws Bonnie and Clyde, 2017). Clyde Barrow was in jail and Bonnie Parker smuggled a gun into the prison to help in the escape. It is said by the American writer, Stephen Hunter (2009), that a car crash had burned one of her (Bonnie’s) legs and she could only hop about or be carried by Clyde, who urged her to leave him before it was too late. Bonnie and Clyde became so well known due to the fact that Bonnie was such an unlikely criminal, she was described as a dim romantic and self-styled poet who dreamed of appearing on Broadway but had to settle for waitressing (Hunter, 2009). According to (Bonnie and Clyde, ‘Still Bold 40 Years Later , 2007). The summer, Bonnie and Clyde became known was called the summer of love. Bonnie and Clyde were known to be madly in love with each other, and on top of loving each other they were getting by during a hard time in America. “Bonnie and Clyde were a young couple in love who were out on the open road, running from the “big bad law” who were “out to get them” (McGasko, 2016, p. 1).
