Should there be black history month
Morgan Freeman states he does not want black history month, but some might think this is strange coming from a very popular black American celebrity. He believes it is ridiculous and does not understand why we have a month long celebration. We do not have months designated for White History Month, Jewish History Month, and Christian History Month instead of a specific race being celebrated, perhaps it should be American History Month to encompass all Americans. Freeman states that Black history is American history and to get rid of racism, society needs to stop talking about racism. To remove Black History Month would be removing a part of current American History since it has been recognized as a celebration for 89 years.
As Americans, we celebrate Black History Month, because Carter G. Woodson, an African American historian, scholar, educator and publisher, created Negro History Week in 1926. Negro History Week turned into a month long celebration in 1976. Woodson selected February to be celebrate Black History Month to honor the contribution of two great American men and their influences in America who were born in the month of February. If we would listen to Rodney King’s 1992 famous statement “why can’t we all get along” maybe things would be different. (cite) It is possible that America would not have had the riots in Ferguson or Baltimore and perhaps the 2014 statement ‘Black Lives Matter” would be all lives matter. Possibly then we would be celebrating American History Month and giving all American people the proper recognition they deserve.
