Out of the many mental disorders one of the most common is Bipolar Disorder also called manic depression. Over 5.7 million Americans 18 and up are faced with the day to day struggles of this disease. The first documentation of Bipolar arose in 1851 when French psychiatrist Jean-Pierre Falret wrote an article on “La Folie Circulaire” which meant circular insanity. This disorder can severely affect one 's daily life by having episodes of things such as mood swings, risky behavior, and can even lead to drug abuse. Altho this disorder does not completely go away there are many things you can do to cope with it. For her depression began soon after having a concussion at 18 years old. She began showing signs of mood swings which just got worse over the years. As for most suffering with this disorder she had abused alcohol as a teenager. Doctors then put her on Prozac which she had no effect on her, showing that she had major depressive disorder. Her family also had a history of severe moods swings. As years passed doctors tried putting her on many different medications, got married and even had two children. But during all those years her depression became much worse, due to the Prozac she was put on again she began to have crying spells, sweating spells, had no energy to move one moment and the next had tons of energy. If not treated as early as possible, preferably when someone starts to notice highs and lows in mood swings the disease can become uncontrollable. As for most people suffering with Bipolar Disorder theirs all started because of something that happened in their history. For instance my two case studies, one patient started to have the first signs of bipolar disorder soon after a major concussion as a teenager and the other after a traumatic event in post secondary school. If this disease goes untreated it could lead to life threatening events such as suicide, aggressive or risky behavior. A lot of the time people go to drugs to help with these symptoms.
