It's amazing to think that a young boy with just a few years of formal schooling went on to become a creative genius and one of the world's most important inventors, receiving more than 50 patents for devices that dramatically changed, improved and modernized the railway system.
Granville T. Woods was bom in Columbus, Ohio, on April 23, 1856, to Tailer and Martha Woods. He left school at age 10 before becoming an apprentice in a machine shop. He loved trains and dedicated his genius to improving the rail system. Despite his limited education, Woods maintained a lifelong commitment to learning everything he could. He studied mechanics, machinery and electricity, oftentimes having white friends check books out of the library for him since Blacks
Lincoln enrolled in electrical engineering at Ohio State University in 1902. During those years at Ohio State he was captain of the football team, which helped his leadership skills grow. Unfortunately in 1907 he had to leave Ohio State a semester before graduation because of typhoid fever. He was awarded his degree in 1926 (Sorry). Unlike Lincoln, Johnson did not get her education from going to school and getting a degree. She learned about welding from her husband because they had to move to Prichard so her husband could get a job on the docks as a welder. While they lived there Johnson got a job at a paper mill and worked there for a little bit until she found out that she could make more money at the shipyard. “Just a little bit more money meant a lot to people” Zaddie said. There are a variety of areas in the science field that African Americans have participated. There were Chemists, Biochemists, Biologists, Physicists, and many others. There were people like Herman Branson who was an assistant professor of chemistry and physics at Howard University who help prepare many young students for the science field. Dr. Branson became a full professor of physics and was made chairman of the physics department of Howard University from 1941 to 1968. He had research interests in mathematical biology and protein structure.
When he was fifteen years old, his mother died from appendicitis. From fifteen years of age to his college years, he lived in an all-white neighborhood. From 1914-1917, he shifted from many colleges and academic courses of study as well as he changed his cultural identity growing up. He studied physical education, agriculture, and literature at a total of six colleges and universities from Wisconsin to New York. Although he never completed a degree, his educational pursuits laid the foundation for his writing career.
Robert Fulton is best known for developing the first successful commercial steamboat. Much like Henry Ford, Robert Fulton didnt actually invent the machine he is most commonly assciated with, but his inovation is what origianlly commercialized the steam boat. Fultons invention did not only lead to new inventions, but also created a new type of transportation around the world.
Lee De Forest was born Aug. 26, 1873, Council Bluffs, Iowa. De Forest was the son of a Congregational minister. His father moved the family to Alabama and there assumed the presidency of the nearly bankrupt Talladega College for Negroes. Excluded by citizens of the white community who resented his father's efforts to educate blacks, Lee and his brother and sister made friends from among the black children of the town and spent a happy although sternly disciplined childhood in this rural community. (Kraeuter, 74). As a child he was fascinated with machinery and was often excited when hearing of the many technological advances during the late 19th century. He began tinkering and inventing things even in high school, often trying to build things that he could sell for money. By the age of 13 he was an enthusiastic inventor of mechanical gadgets such as a miniature blast furnace and locomotive, and a working silverplating apparatus. At 22, after two-thirds of a year at Berea College in West Virginia, he returned to the coalmines and studied Latin and Greek between trips to the mineshafts. He then went on to the University of Chicago, where he received bachelors and master's degrees, and Harvard University, where he became the second black to receive a doctorate in history.
At the age of thirteen he began working in order to earn money for college. He was a shoe shiner, an elevator boy, and a paper boy. He attended the all-black Armstrong High School, where he acted in plays, was a sergeant in the Cadet Corps, and earned good grades, graduating at the age of 16.

Every child has had something that influenced them to become more in life. It could have been a toy car to a doll, a family member or a friend; it made them want to find a higher calling in the world. For Garrett Morgan, it was the sewing machine. Introduced to the sewing machine at a young age, Garrett continued to become more curious about the works of such a compelling contraption. He observed different problems surrounding his community and found a way to make it better. Although he had lacked education and was born a black man in the years of racial oppression, it did not stop him from overcoming the restrictions and hardships that he was born to; therefore becoming one of the greatest known inventors in the world.

Burrhus Frederic Skinner was born in a small town called Susquehanna, Pennsylvania on March 20, 1904. His dad was a lawyer and his mom was a house wife. Skinner was the typical boy, he enjoyed playing outside and to build things. He created many inventions as a kid. He and a friend made a cabin in the woods and Skinner created a cart with backwards steering. When working for a shoe store he thought of and invention that helped the broom pick up dust. Skinner also invented a flotation system for a door to door business that would sell berries. The flotation system separated the ripe berries from the bad. Skinner also enjoyed school very much. He even dedicated a book later in life to his English teacher Miss Graves. Skinner did not have a tragic childhood it was fairly easy. The only tragedy was that younger brother died at sixteen from a cerebral aneurysm.

Thomas (Alva) Edison was one of America’s most important and famous inventors. Edison was born into a time and place where there wasn’t much technological advancements. His inventions helped a lot of things quickly change in the world. His inventions contributed to many inventions today such as the night light, movies, telephones, and records and CDs.
