Lincoln Electric is a huge company but can you believe it was founded with an investment of only $200 (Company History). Zaddie Johnson and James Finney Lincoln grew up at a time when money was hard to get and hard work was necessary. Zaddie and James had a big impact in the welding field because Zaddie showed other women that you can do jobs that men do. James had many inventions that are important to the welding field. Zaddie Johnson had to work hard as a child unlike James Lincoln who had an easy childhood. Johnson was born in 1918 in East Gadsden on a Paden farm. Lincoln enrolled in electrical engineering at Ohio State University in 1902. During those years at Ohio State he was captain of the football team, which helped his leadership skills grow. Unfortunately in 1907 he had to leave Ohio State a semester before graduation because of typhoid fever. He was awarded his degree in 1926 (Sorry). Unlike Lincoln, Johnson did not get her education from going to school and getting a degree. She learned about welding from her husband because they had to move to Prichard so her husband could get a job on the docks as a welder. Lincoln changed the welding field mainly because he invented the welding machine. Johnson changed the way some people look at women as they can work hard like men. The welding field would not be as it is today if it was not for Lincoln and all of his accomplishments in the welding field. Johnson was the leader for an all women welding crew which made more women work hard because they see it could be done. Lyndon B. Johnson, the Democratic president, who served from 1963-1969, might have been infamous for the decisions he made during the Vietnam War, but his Great Society and Civil Rights Act helped shape the nation in a good way. In the United States, the history of Career and Technical Education evolved within four major periods. First, the Awakening period which began in 1776-1826, when the right to a free public education was expressed. During this era, educational opportunities in labor and industrial education were being demanded. The rising working class began to press for an education that were more appropriate for their labor and industry’s needs (Awakening 1776-1826, 1976). Even Benjamin Franklin who represented the Awakening middle class was on board with the rise of technical and vocational education which were taught primarily by private masters or contracted apprenticeships (Cohen, 1976).

Every child has had something that influenced them to become more in life. It could have been a toy car to a doll, a family member or a friend; it made them want to find a higher calling in the world. For Garrett Morgan, it was the sewing machine. Introduced to the sewing machine at a young age, Garrett continued to become more curious about the works of such a compelling contraption. He observed different problems surrounding his community and found a way to make it better. Although he had lacked education and was born a black man in the years of racial oppression, it did not stop him from overcoming the restrictions and hardships that he was born to; therefore becoming one of the greatest known inventors in the world.

Oxy- fuel welding is usually called in workplace/trades terms oxy acetylene welding, gas welding and oxy fuel cutting which are all use fuel and oxygen to cut and weld metals together. It all started with the famous chemist Edmund Davy, who is suppose to be considered as the first man to make acetylene. By accident in 1836 Edmund while trying to make potassium created a black compound which was mixed with water create a gas that burned greatly. Edmund wanted to use this gas to make lights but the materials and production would cost to much. Calcium carbide was not identified until 1862. In 1892 calcium carbide was created by accident when trying to create calcium from coal tar when the production reacted with water.

GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) is more economic; Springer reports that “ GMAW is an economic process because it has higher speeds and higher deposition rates than manual arc welding. There is also no need to constantly change electrodes” ( Page 11). GMAW has a higher speed, which means that you can get the job done faster. It also has high deposition rates which makes the weld look clean and smooth.” This method can be used for a high range of work, but it is not suited for repair work because of it’s weld quality” (Page 4). This process can be used for many variations of work including root welds, joints, T’s, butts, laps, and many more applications. Even though its used for many practices, it is not recommended to use this method for repair work because of the quality of the welds. “ It’s easy to use and it is inexpensive to afford now with 110v machines. But you cannot weld for a long time like a 220v machines would produce. Both have different duty cycles” (Parag. 7). M.I.G is something anyone can learn easily, it’s inexpensive to afford. 110v machines don't bring out the best power to weld, because these machines do not have a good duty cycle. Most people prefer 220v machines because they produce more work, even if they are more expensive. GMAW is the cheapest most reliable process for welding.
