The music industry is full of many great artists. Many of these artists contribute to household names. Two of these artists are Tina Turner and Beyonce. n order to understand the greatness of a great artist you need to understand the difference between them. Beyonce and Tina Turner are different in their appearance, genre of music, and how they were discovered. The way Tina Turner and Beyonce appear to the public is seemingly different. Tina Turner wears sequined, exotic rock stage clothing. She is extraordinary and dresses with a themes such as when she dressed like a tiger in a jungle. In the 1980's she wore an outfit with wings for her "jumping jack flash" entrance. She also wore a Native American style jungle outfit inspired by Sheena the Jungle Queen. On the other hand, Beyonce dresses sexy and fierce and she sometimes comes off as a sexual image and a nit feminist. Beyonce shows more of her sexual dressing on stage and she dresses more elegant outside of performing. Beyonce expresses her individuality through her clothes and she can dress classy, but she always adds a little taste of sexy to it. This would be harder for an African-American woman because they are already sexualized as back-up singers. There would be then a need for overt sexualization as displayed by Tina Turner. Although Tina Turner is an extraordinary performer her success is banked on that overt sexualization where’s the women of 20 Feet hoped to rely on their vocal talents.

The Hip-hop culture began around the 1970’s in Bronx, New York and it was mostly amongst the Black and Latino community at that time. Hip Hop emerged out of an atmosphere of disappointment, anger, hate, discrimination, and disillusionment which; made it easy for the audience to comprehend and enjoy the music not as a song, but as a public personal message for each person to understand. Hip-hop was born in numerous places: in the neighborhoods, in the parks, playgrounds, bedrooms, bathrooms, a broken home, and even on the street corners. MC-ing and DJ-ing were at the center of this emerging culture, but hip-hop was always bigger than just the music, it was also break dancing and graffiti. John Brown was a radical who believed he was led by god to evoke a war on pro-slavery activists and slave owners in order to diminish slavery. At the age of 59 Brown set out to put a team of anti-slavery abolitionist and free black men together, call them an army and execute his plan. However only 21 people enlisted mainly whites, 13, no slaves or free blacks joined. As surprising as this was to Brown it surprises me too. I wonder if the blacks were scared. Why didn’t they jump at every opportunity and chance to free those oppressed by the inhumane of slavery? Maybe they had their own plans to victory in the works. Nina Simone used music to challenge, provoke, incite, and inform the masses during the period that we know as the Civil Rights Era. In the songs” Four Women”, “Young Gifted and Black”, and Mississippi God Damn”, Nina Simone musically maps a personal "intersectionality" as it relates to being a black American female artist. Kimberly Crenshaw defines "intersectionality" as an inability for black women to separate race, class and gender. Nina Simone’s music directly addresses this paradigm. While she is celebrated as a prolific artist her political and social activism is understated despite her front- line presence in the movement. According to Ruth Feldstein “Nina Simone recast black activism in the 1960’s.” Feldstein goes on to say that “Simone was known to have supported the struggle for black freedom in the United States much earlier, and in a more outspoken manner around the world than had many other African American entertainers.”
Over and over again critics write about Nina Simone’s power and charisma throughout the Civil Rights Movement. She sang the words of an entire movement, “All I want is equality/ for my sister, my brother, my people, and me./ Yes, you lied to me all these years”(Simone Mississippi). She sang out for her entire race, and with a “smoky- toned” voice, when four young girls were killed in a church bombing (Lewis). She sang “Will my country fall, stand or fall?/ Is it too late for us all?/ And did Martin Luther King just die in vain? (Simone Why?) after the death of MLK. Nina Simone… a singer with many different voices, a singer who denies categorization, a woman who is genre-less to prove a point.
Ella Baker and Martin Luther King Jr. did have their similarities as leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, but there were vast differences as well. Their differences allowed the Civil Rights Movement to be more encompassing while fighting for the same cause. Baker and King both grew up in the South, had religious upbringings, had at least some level of a higher education, and were public speakers. What set them apart was their differing opinions on who contributed to social change, and how. This is expressed through the varying social classes they depended on, importance placed on reputations developed through public associations, and nonviolence tactics that used to fight for equality. In Sojourner Truth’s speech “Ain’t I a Woman?” and Frederick Douglass’ “The Hypocrisy of American Slavery” use rhetorical questions for emphasis, anecdotes to connect with the audience, counterarguments to Christianity’s opposing stance and repetition to force the audience to listen. These contemporaries used similar ways to prove their causes were not only worthy but necessary for society to move forward from its oppressing history. Both of them draw from personal experience, as former slaves. Although neither of them would live to see their goals fully realized, these speeches played an immense role in changing public opinion and they continue to inspire marginalized societies.

Harriet Tubman: Conductor of the Underground Railroad is a historical account describing the brutality of slavery, where The People Could Fly: American Black Folktales is a fictional portrayal explaining the misery of slavery. You can see that both of this stories show the slave’s perspective on enslavement and how slavery had a humongous impact on slaves. Therefore, these two stories are similar in numerous ways but, still are very different.
