Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates has a lot of important essential themes ranging from the American Dream to the childhood of black youth. He constantly describes how the American Dream is only for “whites” and actually is an illusion that they live in to hide from the discomforts of Black America. He also talks about the struggles of being a parent of a black child and growing up black in America. He also talks about how Blacks have to do an immense amount of work to be equivalent to white mediocrity. In saying this, Coates also talks about how whites do not think they are thriving because of white supremacy in the country, but because they are doing more and better. Why black youth go through so much in their childhood, why black parents have to be so harsh on their children, why black people have to do so much to get anywhere in life is all because America holds no value next to the black body. This brings light into why so many deaths of black bodies go without justice, why so many black bodies go missing without anyone knowing or looking, and why so many black children fall through the cracks. In knowing this, we can stop expecting justice for deaths and wrong done to us by our oppressors because it will never happen. I learned a lot from this book, but my three biggest takeaways include, expecting the worst and hoping for the best, the thought process behind white people and the harm they do, and to find joy in my family, community, and life. Throughout Coates’ explanation of his childhood, as well as how he is raising his own son, I find so many similarities with my childhood and how my parents raise me. This is why my three takeaways were; hope for the best and expect the worst seeing that it does not get easier as the generations go by or as we get older. Most situations might turn out alright, but if you expect the worst then you can be more prepared for the reality of America, the country that has no value in your
