An apple a day keeps the doctor away is a statement that everyone is pretty familiar with. But what exactly does an apple provide for our body that makes this statement true? As I look through my refrigerator hoping something in there would inspire me to finally find a topic to write about, I realized just how much money I spend eating fruit. After breakfast, I grab an apple to eat on my way to work. After coming home from work and before going to the gym I reach for an apple. There’s something about an apple that catches my attention and I gravitate towards them when browsing for something to eat. Even though I consider myself a healthy eater, most people including myself consume food without the full knowledge of the benefits or harm it does to our body. Choosing to write about apples seemed rather simplistic and mundane, but the fact of matter is I don’t know the full extent of what makes an apple healthy. Add to that why someone chose an apple to create a statement of how it can keep doctors away. Surely that statement was made as a metaphor for eating healthy and having a healthy lifestyle but why chose an apple when you have many options of fruit to pick from? I was determined to find out.
I had to make this research somewhat fun for me, especially when my topic focused on apples and not some awesome exotic fruit that destroys tumors and helps heal the world. To begin, I asked my boss, coworkers, family members and a couple of strangers what it is about an apple that keeps the doctors away. At first they thought I was perpetuating a ruse as I held an old fashion recorder while they gave an answer but once I told them it was for a school project, they became willing participants. Most people are accustomed to eating an apple, I would surprised if there’s a single person on earth who has never been introduced to apple; it’s perhaps the most common fruit throughout the world. Many places offers variety of apples that are delicious yet economically affordable. So the next time you eat one just stop and think for a moment how underrated they are and that bite your about to take could’ve possibly delayed the inevitable trip to the doctors and perhaps, the dentist.
