Many times when people need to accomplish a task, they fall into a pattern of sitting on
the couch, watching Netflix, relaxing, and doing absolutely nothing all day long. This is called
laziness. There are countless causes of why people could be sluggish today. Often, people
become overwhelmed with life, and do not know where to start. This might force someone to
become a couch potato. Another matter of why people could become drowsy is because of
tragedies that may have happened in their lives. For an example, during a mid-life crisis, he or
she may have no motivation to get out of bed in the morning, and no reason to work, since they
are in such shock about what had just happened. This causes lethargicness as well.

Even though it might feel amazing
sometimes, you need to stop being weary and start getting things done daily, that way you can be
productive, reach your goals, and achieve what you have always dreamed about.
Being overwhelmed is one extremely easy way to slip into sluggishness. Often, when
people have so much to do in their life, they become overwhelmed and stressed out. This forces
them to shut down, and they lose motivation to do anything. Their bodies and minds go into
lockdown mode, to the point of where they do not want to get off the couch. If people just
change our mindset, they could be more productive every day. Instead of people staring at their
to-do lists, wondering how they will be able to get everything completed in time, everyone needs
to focus on one task at a time, do the job well, then move onto the next task. That way people
will be able to accomplish many things in a short amount of time, and they can use their time as
wisely as possible. Being overwhelmed is definitely a cause of slothfulness, but it can be

If someone is going through a great deal of situations, they may have no motivation
to get out of bed. They don’t have a purpose, nor do they have a motivation to work diligently.
This is perfectly understandable, knowing that people cannot control some things that happen in
their lives. These people need some time to relax and get through their tragedies. However, they
eventually need to get out of their slump, and get back into regular life. They need to find
something that motivates them, drives them, and makes them want to get up in the morning.
One of the biggest causes of lethargicness is procrastination. Even if people do not want
to admit it, each and every person procrastinates from time to time. People put off their jobs until
the very last minute, because they don’t feel like doing it. People delay what they need to be doing because they feel that they have better things to do (aka watching an entire series on
Netflix!). Some may just not know where to start on a certain project. Procrastination can be
caused because some do not have anything that motivates or drives them. As a result, everyone
needs to find a passion that makes them thrilled to be productive, something that makes
“I need to stop procrastinating, I’ll start tomorrow!” Most of us have uttered these words at least once in our academic life, if not daily. Procrastination is habitual, it is gauged that 95% of college students in America procrastinate, 50% of which who claim to do it half the time and 38% who do it on occasion (koestner, Senecal, & Vallerand, 1995). Procrastination can be defined as prolonging a task and/or delaying it for periods of time knowing it’s in need of attention. Negative implications associated with this can include a decline in quality work and overall learning experience, with an increase in stressful urgency (Goroshit & Hen, 2014). Based on the above information it can be concluded that procrastination in college students is
I am a procrastinator and I have been ever since I was a child, which I am sure many others have been as well. As a child, I would put off my work mainly because I did not want to do and wanted to occupy myself with something else, rather than to sit there and actually do the work. When this happened, of course, the work would either be done in the morning, at night, or it would not be done at all. In his article, “The 5 Most Common Reasons We Procrastinate,” written for Psychology Today, Shahram Heshmat (2016), “The lack of imposed direction that’s become common in the workplace might contribute to the increase in procrastination” (para. 4). This is something that was more prevalent in my freshmen year of high
There are some college students who are the arousal type procrastinators. These procrastinators are the thrill-seekers (the ones who wait to the last minute of their day to make a move). Next you have the “avoider” procrastinators who would like others to think of them as the individual who lack more effort than ability. Then you have the decisional procrastinators. These procrastinators are the ones who cannot make a decision solely off of their assignment (Marano).
There have been countless times in my life where I have struggled to stay focused on a task ahead of me. I always plan out my work time ahead in order for me to complete a task, but every time I find that I have to revise my plan every day closer to the deadline. The little work that I should have done each day turns into a tremendous amount of work before the due date. Occupying myself with other things that keep me entertained, only brings me a lot of distress at the end. As I continue to torture myself , this bad habit of mine continous to dwell inside of me. One could say that there may be many implied meanings to this concept, but nevertheless, this force that messes with me everyday is considered to be procrastination.
Procrastination might seem as a very basic topic to research about, and even though I might not find the answer to what I need to. One of the reasons of why I chose this theme because is something that no one will be more interested than a procrastinator. Being a procrastinator myself, I’m always making excuses to not work or even to study. Another reason is that of many people think that procrastination is the same as laziness. Understanding the difference between these two themes is very hard because many people don’t know the importance of knowing how procrastination starts. Procrastination has been linked to many disorder like; depression, irrational behavior, low self-esteem, where laziness doesn't appear anywhere close. A procrastinator might have one of these negative aspects, and they aren’t aware and go with that definition of procrastination that the society has implanted. Which is procrastinator are lazy people. For adults, this is very hard to assimilate, and to deal with now imagine in high school how hard it can be, even though there you have a lot of help from other adults. In the university is harder and for some hardcore
Just as they are standing face-to-face with each other, I am standing face-to-face with procrastination. I encounter difficulty managing my time with just about everything I do; I always wait too long. Throughout high school I was never in a hurry to get any of my work done. The work was easy to me, so if I waited until the last minute to do anything, it wasn’t hard for me to finish. I could always take my time to get everything done and still get a good grade in high school. Even if the work was harder and took me a little extra time, my teachers were all very lenient and accepted late work. My high school was very easy and allowed me to get into the bad habit of procrastinating.
For the impulsive person, procrastination is a result of inability to buckle down and really focus on any one thing at a time. It's the "shiny object" theory of procrastination. The impulsive procrastinator may have too many projects going on at once,
Recent studies show that procrastination can lead to health conditions like the cardiovascular disease which affects the heart and blood vessels. You can also face conditions like hypertension that cause your blood pressure to be unusually high. “Psychological scientist Fuschia Sirois of Bishop’s University in Quebec reports that trait procrastination—that is, a tendency to delay important tasks despite the negative consequences—was significantly associated with having hypertension or cardiovascular disease (HT/CVD) even after controlling for the effects of age, race, educational level, and other personality factors”. People tend to procrastinate in different ways that can affect their health like putting off checkups or avoiding exercise. When you leave a thing like projects to do until the last minute then you're probably doing them later in the day. This could lead to you staying up late. Some people will do anything to get stuff done including staying up all night. The average person should get eight hours of sleep but when you procrastinate you will never get enough sleep. When you don't get enough sleep you are likely to catch every flu and cold that is going around because lack of sleep affects your immune system. Less sleep means more weight. Studies show that people who get less than 7 hours of sleep are likely to become obese or gain weight. So if procrastinate, you may put on some weight.
The definition of procrastination according to Solomon & Rothblum is the determined delay of the start or completion of a task (1984). Procrastinators will also differ from those who do not procrastinate in numerous ways. An example would be that procrastinators often fear failure, strive for perfection, may be slightly pessimistic and more anxious, which may become worse when they realize they are procrastinating (McCown & Johnson, 1991) or when deadlines are approaching (Tice & Baumeister, 1997). The personal and realistic problems that result from dysfunctional procrastination are predominantly acute in academics, as the inclination to put off school-related tasks often result in challenging levels of stress (Solomon & Rothblum 1984), on the whole the end of the academic semester would be the peak (Tice & Baumeister, 1997).
Feeling Lazy? When you feel lazy, even simple tasks seem like too much work because your energy is too low compared to the energy required by the task. If you blame the task for being too difficult or tedious, you'll procrastinate to conserve energy. Raise your energy level by eating right and exercising regularly. It is no secret that a fit person can handle much more task than an unfit person even though the difficulty of the task remains same. Improve on your eating habit; make your diet abundant in raw fruits and vegetables.
The definition of procrastination is: the action of delaying or postponing something. Tim Urban, who conducts a speech called Inside the Mind of a Master Procrastinator for TED in 2016, explains that every human is a procrastinator- some more than others. I agree with everything he says in his speech because I can connect with every piece of evidence he claims, mostly including that there is a “Panic Monster” that pops up in your brain when you are close to a deadline and haven’t gotten anything done, especially when it comes from why I’m always so stressed out about school. There are two different kinds of procrastination: deadline and non-deadline. (Urban, 2016) Everyone that I have ever met is a procrastinator
A. H. C. Chu and J. N. Choi, psychologists, distinguished two types of protracting, they discovered that active procrastination has attainable characteristics that lead to positive personal outcomes (Choi and Moran). These positive personal outcomes are a result of waiting at its finest. People with these adequate dilatory skills have probably learned from their deficient habits in the past that may help everyone know that the view of holding off can change. Writing this essay has changed my view on procrastination slightly, as I can see how it can be good for you. With my siblings, free time is limited. So taking time to do something more entertaining helps me take a break from stressful work. Then when I get back to it I feel more confident that I can focus and finish it. That’s an example of active procrastination for me. Frank Partnoy shows historical views on procrastination, in an article about his book, such as how “The Greeks and Romans generally regarded procrastination highly. The wisest leaders embraced procrastination and would basically sit around and think and not do anything unless they absolutely had to” (Gambino 2012). Those Romans and Greeks were able to enjoy their time of relaxation, using procrastination as a healthy tool rather than a bad habit. Even wise leaders used it! What an amazing realization that we get procrastination from
Sleep is a very important factor in the human function. Our body and brain is able to reset itself and rejuvenate while we sleep. When we do not get the required amount of sleep, we start to feel lethargic and foggy minded, because our mind and body wasn’t able to replenish itself. Sleep is imperative that an insignificant rest deficiency or lack of sleep can affect our ability to remember things; decisions and can affect our temperament. Chronic sleep deficiency can get the body to feel agitated and it could lead to serious health problems such as, heart problems, stress, acne, and obesity.
Simple acts of laziness may seem harmless, but can cause someone to develop mental stagnation, intellectual degradation, and lowered moral integrity. This way of living can only do damage to lethargic individual and those around him or her. Job loss, aggravation of mental health, and degradation of physical health are all possibilities that could be led up to by allowing oneself to succumb to the temptations of a lazy, lethargic way of life. People must do the the best they can in the one life they get, as opposed to idly wasting
“Something in human nature causes us to start slacking off at our moment of greatest accomplishment. As you become successful, you will need a great deal of self-discipline not to lose your sense of balance, humility and commitment.
