In 1971, in Alexandria Virginia, African- Americans and whites were forced to integrate and become one at T.C. Williams High School. Them being forced to become one caused racial tension among the community. Based on a true story, the movie centers around the Titans football team, who is led by Coach Boone an African- American. But the movie is about more than just football, it’s about learning to trust and accept one another as equals. The literary devices I’ll be using throughout the essay is, small town dynamics, characterization, the sound and lighting throughout the movie and the setting of where the events are taking place and how racism is a big factor. Coach Boone takes the head coaching position from Coach Bill Yoast. Yoast was the head football coach before Boone came in and got the job. In a show of respect, Boone offers an assistant coach position to Yoast. At first Yoast refuses to take the job, but then agrees on taking the job when the white football players pledge to boycott the team if he doesn’t take it. The relationship between the two men starts off very rough of course because of their racial differences, but they know they have to over come the struggle in order to become a successful football team. At the beginning Coach Yoast shows favoritism for all the white football players. Soon after Coach Boone puts him in check by telling him he will decide on the starting line up not by color, but by hard work and dedication and mostly importantly teamwork. The director uses the music as a symbol for the audience to determine what person belongs to which group. At the beginning of the movie when there is a standoff between the blacks and the whites the director uses a commentary sound to show the atmosphere of a prejudice and hostile city they are in. The lighting is very dim which automatically tells us that the mood of the movie is dark and there is a lot of anger among many people. The director main point of the movie is to show that racism shouldn’t exist. His other main point that I got out of it was him showing how whites and blacks became one, they all became a family at the end of the movie. Although the whites feared they would lose their starting position to the blacks and the blacks feared they wouldn’t get any playing time because of their skin color they were still able to get through it all and were all able to put their pride aside and become one and by them coming together and looking past all the criticism they got something great out of it, a state
