World War II was a very unfair time for a lot of people, including innocent civilians and soldiers fighting in battles. The Battle of Stalingrad made a large impact on WWII during the mid-1940’s. During this battle, many soldiers were treated unjustly and unfairly. This paper will focus on the hardships and rough living conditions soldiers had to face during the Battle of Stalingrad. One way that oppression was caused during this battle was though the soldier’s environment and situation of living. The next way is how many innocent civilians were treated in the midst of the battle. The last way was the war in general causing oppression. All of these reasons caused oppression in their own ways and made the battle horrifying

The soldiers went head on into frigid, freezing temperatures. This caused most of them to get bad frostbite. These horrible circumstances made soldiers freeze to death, ”The soldiers he had released wandered dazedly, begging food, freezing to death beside the road”(Craig 201). In this picture, two soldiers are very bundled up in many layers of clothing. The one sitting down has wrappings of cloth covering almost his entire body. It seems his face is damaged and his right leg is badly wounded by either gunshot or the gangrene given by the subzero temperatures. They both seem unhappy and are both probably very worried about their health. Many of the soldiers also faced serious hunger and lack of proper clothing. One of Hitler’s closely working liaison officers, named Major Coelestin von Zitzewitz, had a very miserable time during his stay in the bunkers, living with germans who suffered bad frostbite and hunger pains(Craig 303-304).Zitzewitz witnessed rats and mice that were “ravenous”(Craig 304). These rodents chewed two toes off of a soldier’s badly frostbitten feet.(Craig 304). This situation demonstrates the terrible conditions that soldiers had to go through during

The reality of the battle was that it was a terrifyingly oppressive period of time that resulted in many people losing their lives and all of their belongings such as their homes. The treatment of soldiers was a major part of why the Battle of Stalingrad was so oppressive. The next reason was the war itself. The war had many bombings such as the one talked about in this paper. The bombings caused fire to spread everywhere and have smoke fill everyone’s lungs. This resulted in a large number of deaths and losses of many buildings and homes. The last major reason why this battle was so horrible was the way civilians and prisoners were treated. They were unfairly abused and taken advantage of in miserable ways. During the Battle of Stalingrad, so many soldiers fought so hard to keep themselves alive and did gruesome things to remain breathing. It is amazing how this event caused so many casualties and innocent lives to go to waste and how most of the world will never know the unspeakably tragic story of each and everyone of the victims associated with this battle during World War
