Barbra Streisand was born on April 24, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York. Barbara had a difficult beginning in life. She was born to Emanuel and Diana Streisand, Emanuel passed away from an epileptic seizure when Barbra was fifteen months old. Prior to his death Emanuel worked as a high school English teacher. Her mother worked as a school secretary and struggled to provide for Barbra and her older brother, Sheldon. They moved in with her grandparents to survive near poverty. In 1949 Barbra was sent to a Jewish Camp and came home to find that her mother had married and was pregnant. Barra’s mother married used car salesman, Louis Kind. Barbara described him as emotionally abusive. Barbra’s looks caused her problems in childhood and she felt rejected by the other children. Barbra also felt rejected by her mother and step father who weren’t at all supportive. Barbra convinced the couple to give her a scholarship to Allen’s acting school and she offered babysitting services in return. She was raised in a Jewish family with her parents, but went to a Catholic school. At home, she spoke Polish. Ruth suddenly started hearing offensive comments by some of her close Polish Catholic friends. They said things like “you killed Christ.” It was an incredible shock.” That was just the beginning. By the time she was just 12, and the Second World War was underway, Ruth had lost both her parents and her world as she knew it. She was in the middle of the Holocaust.

Rachel Dein is a London Based artist, who studied Fine Arts at Middlesex University . She is most famously known for her tiles made of cement and plaster featuring molds of flowers. She currently runs and owns the Tactile Studio in North London to support herself and her three children. Before setting up her own studio, but after going to art school, she decided to take up an apprenticeship at The Royal Opera House and later branched out to other theaters to continue her prop making career including The English National Opera, The West End Theaters, London Transport Museum and Selfridges Christmas windows. Her time in prop making allowed her to explore her love of theatre, film, and opera while expanding her knowledge of 3d design. She also enjoys gardening, which is where she has gotten some of the materials for her craft.

As the youngest child and only girl in her family of five, she was her mother’s pride and joy. She had two supportive parents, Gertrude and George, and two older brothers, Jack and George Junior. Gertrude Temple was a stay-at-home mom while George went to work as a bank teller, which played in Shirley’s favor when she needed someone to manage her money later in life (Blashfield 55). Gertrude Temple has been called the first stage mother (Blashfield 22) for good reason. Shirley Temple was acting before she could read, so her mother helped her memorize her lines. Temple’s mother served as her private costume designer, and never failed to make the young star’s performance her best yet, by encouraging her to “Sparkle, Shirley Sparkle!” (David 2).

Eddie Carson was a drummer and had an entertainment act with Baker’s mother. At birth, Baker’s name was Freda Josephine McDonald. (Robinson) Later, Baker changed her name when she got into the entertainment business. In her youth, Baker was always poorly dressed and hungry; she started working at the age of 8 years old. Jennifer Lopez was born in the Bronx, New York on July 24, 1970. She was born in the United States to Puerto Rican Parents, Jennifer considers herself to be a Puerto Rican and she is very proud of her Hispanic heritage and culture. Her father is David Lopez, a computer specialist, and her mother Guadalupe Lopez, a Kindergarten teacher. Her parents recognized Jennifer’s talent and enthusiasm for performing and at the age of five the enrolled her in dance classes. Her mother said “Jennifer always loved to sing, but she was also a great actress and knew that she would have a bright future ahead of her.” With the support of her parents Jennifer grew up to be a very sensible girl, who is still very close to her family. When Jennifer earned her million-dollar paycheck for playing the role in the movie Selena, she bought her mom a Cadillac. Even though they saw Jennifer’s talent at the age of five, their relationship was not always understandable. Jennifer made a major decision and that was not to go to College. That decision was very disappointing to her parents who wanted her to go to law school. Her parents supported her pursuit of a career in show business, they did not wanted to be in the expense of her education. When Jennifer told her parents that she was not going to College and law school, they thought it was really stupid to go off and try to be a movie star.
Ruby Bridges was born on September 8, 1954, in Tylertown, Mississippi. When she lived in Mississippi her parents shared cropped lands with her grandparents. When Ruby was six years old her mom thought about her education and wanted to move. In 1960 Abon and lucille (Ruby’s parents) decided to move for a better change in life. Ruby and her parents moved to a good part of town where there would be less discrimination and hate in New Orleans, Louisiana.
One of the folk music singers who sang with the Freedom Singers were Joan Baez. Joan wanted people to have peace through her music. Joan Baez was born in Staten Island, New York, on January 9, 1941. In 1951, she spent a year living in Baghdad, Iraq, with her family when her father accepted a job there. When Joan’s family moves back to the U.S; the family moves to California. In 1956, she hears a Martin Luther King Junior’s lecture on nonviolence and Civil Rights. She also bought her very first guitar. In 1957, she commits her first act of Civil disobedience by refusing to leave her high school during an air-raid drill. Then, she graduated in 1958, from Palo Alto High School.
Ruby Bridges is a prime example of how little girls with bright minds hold so much power. Not only was she intelligent, Ruby was also courageous, determined and warm-hearted. During the time when she was growing up, society was more discriminative towards African-Americans. It was so severe that little kids were separated in schools just based on the pigment of their skin. As the first black child to attend a white elementary school, she was defying stereotypes and changing history, not to mention, she looked absolutely adorable doing it.
