Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Beyoncé. These are people that teens all over the world look up to, and want to be just like them. These celebrities have become sexualized and put that into music that 10, 11, and 12 year olds are listening to. Our culture needs to have role models that kids can look up to, who will have a positive influence on their life. The effects of giving teenagers sexualized and inadequate role models are eating disorders, creating idols out of them, and drug use. They need people who they can respect, and who will be a positive influence on their life. Teenagers think that because their favorite celebrity is skinny, they need to be also. This results in anorexia and eating disorders. Several of these can be linked with teens wanting to look like some they are not. What is wrong with teenager’s day dreaming a little? They need role models they can look up to, and people they want to be like. Positive role models can help with avoiding drug and alcohol abuse, as well as self-esteem issues and academic performance. (Effects of Good Role Models). Seeing success in a celebrity, and them abstaining from drugs and alcohol and the influence of this world is something that kids need more of. Our culture needs to role models to influence our children, and inspire them. Teenagers need motivation and a goal to work towards. Celebrities and pop stars give them that motivation. Teenagers do need role models and people they can look up. That is a fact that should not be argues. But, it is when the role models do things that parents would not want their kids doing.
