The film Back to the Future follows the Three Act Structure, the foundation of all dramatic storytelling. Act One introduces Marty, the protagonist and hero of the story who lives in an ordinary world when we learn about his life, his personality, his dysfunctional family, his girlfriend, and his everyday problems. We are introduced to another character that plays an important role, Doc. In the opening scene there is a lot of foreshadowing, cues that will have a meaning as the story develops. We learn about Doc’s personality, his profession as a scientist, his obsession with time, and how he and the protagonist have a close relationship as Marty knows where the key to Doc’s house is hidden. When it is time for the meeting, Marty refuses the call to action, he would rather be sleeping than helping Doc with his experiment, but he goes anyway. In his meeting with Doc, we are introduced to the character as being Marty’s mentor as he teaches Marty about his experiment. He teaches him how the time machine works and prepares him for time travel. Then we are introduced to the antagonists, the Libyan terrorists, who are threatening Doc and Marty’s life because he stole plutonium to generate the energy needed to power the DeLorean time machine. We are presented with an inciting incident, Doc’s death. As the hero’s journey continues, the hero must cross the first threshold because his life is in danger. Marty is forced to travel in time, marking the first plot point. As he’s in the DeLorean he realizes he can save Doc’s life. The character has a goal, and must achieve it. Marty has to be prepared to face the challenges brought upon him for his decision to time
