Oprah Gail Winfrey was born on January 29, 1954 to young, unwed parents, Vermon Winfrey, and Vernita Lee. He father served in the army as a solider at a local base. Vernita found work as a maid in Milwaukee Wisconsin shortly after the birth of Oprah. Oprah was left in the hands of her grandmother, Hattie Mae Lee, when her mother found work in Wisconsin as a house maid. When Oprah was left to live with her grandmother on the family farm she never wasted a minute of her childhood, and she was never bored. Her only friends in her early years were the farm animals that lived on the farm. This didn’t worry her any she gave them parts in plays that she would make up, included them in games she would play, and even included them in tea parties. She was sworn by secrecy not to tell anyone about this. She left Milwaukee and then was later raped by her cousin, a family friend, her moms live in boyfriend, and once a favourite uncle. She was still sworn to secrecy by this and if she said a word the men told her that both the men and Oprah would be in a lot of trouble. This is when Oprah stated to be more of a problem and her mother looked in to sending her to girls home but she was denied entrance because all the beds were full. Back to Nashville Oprah went. Going back and living with her father she knew that she had to obey and she would not be a problem any longer. She was given new clothes, a set of rules, and a curfew and tasks to do around the house. If she did not do her tasks she was not given any food. Her study habits were good and probably came from the most influential teacher she had, Mrs. Duncan her fourth grade
