BEER! Uniting people and events since yeast met sugar!

Catalyst. (Kat-el-lyst) noun.

A substance that precipitates a process or event, especially without being involved in or changed by the consequences. The bonding agent which triggers the adherence or connection of two elements.

Alaskans are a social bunch, and all things considered, it’s hard for me to think of anything that has brought more of us together than a good beer. Today, I am here to tell you that I believe Beer is a catalyst.

Math was never my subject, but I would probably wear out my fingers and toes just trying to count the number friends I’ve made over a cold hefeweisen (and I actually drink more Belgian Browns!).

Without Beer, how could this frozen Alaskan have ever spent a moment laughing with prolific brewer and writer Charlie Papazian? After a concert a few years back, I shared a toast and some laughs with perhaps the worlds finest jazz virtuoso Al DiMeola. More valuable suds that night could not be found.

Sometimes, I like to re-apply this catalyst with old friends like Ken Prestegard from Specialty Imports, or brew connoisseur Randy Kaer, just to keep the bonds firm.

SALUTE YOUR BEER

Last week I bought a futon off craigslist, and the seller was Iraq veteran and serious brewing student Dustin Slinker. This guy has spent years fighting for our country overseas, and now he is back home. For a change, he is taking a break from land mines and dune spiders to brew beer the right way. It was great to meet him, and hear his enthusiasm about fresh hops and select grain. ... on Penny's Maple Porter. They have announced that a portion of the proceeds will support Rogues Gallery Kennel,. a local dog-mushing kennel that offers a home to the dogs that other kennels have no use for. Another example of Beer For Good.

HEARD ON THE STREET:

Howell, a well known Alaskan beer ambassador has been preaching the message of fine ales to a thirsty audience in his class “Beer Art and History” at Kenai Penninsula College.
