Aztec Geography The Aztecs of the Valley of Mexico had great natural defence. One form of their protection was mountains, the mountains provided stone along with a multitude of potable water sources for the Aztecs. They are made up of stone and ore such as iron. The mountains are shown on the right side of the exhibit. The Valley of Mexico was where the Aztecs resided. The valley gave the Aztecs a large body of water that was used for farming and trade. The valley was made up of plant matter, dirt, stones. The Lake created fertile soil, the Aztecs would use the soil on man-made islands called chinampas to farm.
