She tried to reach her superiors, but they told Chantele that it is none of her business. Having no one to talk about her concern in the company, she consulted with an old friend who is in charge of the environmental column of the local newspaper. Apparently some environmental groups have expressed concerns and have started to monitor some places in the country. There are two types of stakeholders: primary stakeholders and secondary stakeholders. One of the right-and-right issues is when Chantele is having a second thought about Angela, her operations manager, regarding the minimum danger caused by the “slips”. The many stakeholders in this case include George, the city of Hondo, current employees, environment and the company. George relocated his family and stands to lose his position if the company is moved to another location. He is faced with the decision of continuing to allow the emissions to soar above the EPA guidelines, at the current location by scheduling the heavy emissions work at night, therefore causing more damage to the environment. Furthermore, should he instruct the company to relocate to the new location the environment would still be affected on the U.S. side. By continuing to be above the benchmark of emissions the environment, employees and citizens are affected. “The environmental issues managers face are not simply about trees and water and birds. These issues affect all people, including the managers themselves.” (eGuide, p.2) In addition, the employees are stakeholders because they face losing their source of income. Lastly, the company is a stakeholder because they stand to face the cost of relocating or continuing to suffer from fines. The interest for each stakeholder is a loss of monies and the environment continues to be affected.
You decide, one Sunday, to take a random drive in the country to enjoy the fresh air and lush scenery of fields lit bright with glowing trees swaying in the afternoon sun. After exploring the countless, sand and dirt covered roads that pave the rolling landscape, you turn down one a little more remote than the others. In this case, the following tests are the most relevant for this disaster: harm test, colleague test, and publicity test. The harm test consists on analyzing if the options perform less harm than the alternatives (Davis, 1999). In other words, this test implies that the benefits need to prevail over the harm, which will minimize the harm and maximizing the benefits. In the Love Canal case, this test failed since it was clear that the well-being of the public was affected due to the birth defects, miscarriages, and health issues that the community exhibited. Similarly, the colleague test consists on asking yourself what your colleagues would say when suggesting this option as the solution (Davis, 1999). When making decisions, engineers and companies should take actions on activities that would look appropriate for the general population to accept and for a panel of peers. With this in mind, Hooker’s engineers and the company itself did not care about how chemically polluting the environment will be judged or looked like in front of publics eyes and the community; therefore, the Hooker’s engineers and the company failed this test due their lack of public awareness. Additionally, when considering the publicity test, everyone should ask themselves if they want their “choice of this option published in the newspaper” (Davis, 1999). With respect to the Ecological Model of health, the focus here is the relationship between the citizens and their environment, so any change in the environment can affect the health of citizens (Drummer. 2008).
