Maycomb is a small town with big problems. Maycomb is a town in Harper Lee’s “To Kill A Mockingbird”. “To Kill A Mockingbird has a slew of character, including Atticus, Jem, Scout, and Tom. Atticus is a lawyer with a son, Jem, and a daughter, Scout. Tom is a black man who is accused of rape, and Atticus has to defend him. It makes sense for Atticus to defend Tome because he has good character; he is selfless and brave. One reason that it makes sense is that Atticus is selfless. He stood up for Tom and defended him without worrying about his self being. Atticus defended Tom even though he had many things to lose. One instance in the book states,”You’ve got everything to lose, Atticus. I mean everything” (Lee 195). This quote shows that Atticus had everything to lose by defending Tom. Atticus also had to deal with an unfunny situation with a mob. In chapter 15 the book says,”In obedience to my father, there followed what I later realized was a sickeningly comic aspect of an unfunny situation” (Lee 202). Atticus is brave because he had to deal with Mr. Ewell after the trial. In chapter 23 the book says,”According to Miss Stephanie Crawford, however, Atticus was leaving the post office when Mr.Ewell approached him, cussed him, spat on him, and threatened to kill him” (Lee 295). This shows that Atticus was brave stand up for Tom because he had to deal with Mr. Ewell. Another reason that Atticus is brave because of things that might happen in his family. In chapter 9 the book says,”But do you think I could face my children otherwise? You know what’s going to happen as well as I do, Jack, and I hope and pray I can get Jem and Scout through it without bitterness, and most of all, without catching Maycomb’s usual disease” (Lee 117).
