They have an exoskeleton, and an open circulatory system. Every time you look at an arthropod you will see a segmented body. Arthropods are astounding creatures! Without them our food chain would be all over the place! Would you go into battle without a suit of armor on? Three functions of an arthropod's exoskeleton are protection, support and muscle attachment. Arthropods have to molt their shells in order to grow. Bess beetles range in size all the way from 21 millimeters to 80 millimeters. The beetles are named after the French word baiser, which means “to kiss”, due to the fact that they often make a smooching sound with their legs. They have a small horn that protrudes from their head, and use their antennae to drive them forward when experiencing new smells. Though the beetles may look quite menacing, they are surprisingly docile. They enjoy feasting on rotten wood, moss, and adult beetle fecal matter after it has been partially digested by bacteria. In exoskeleton, chitin fibrils are wrapped with proteins forms a form of fibers which is assembled further into a bundle of fibers in the exoskeleton. The Amphioctopus Marginatus is of the Kingdom Animalia because like other members of this kingdom, it is both multicellular and is a heterotroph. This species is also part of the phylum Mollusca because like other mollusks, it has a coelom, (letter B on the first phylogeny tree), a visceral body mass, and a mantle (letter C). Furthermore, because it is not part of the phylum Chordata, it does not have the notochord (letter A) (Doc 2). It is of the class Cephalopoda, because like other members of this class, such as Asteroceras Confusum, the Marginatus has a merged head and foot (letter F), a siphon (letter D), and a ring of tentacles (letter E) surrounding the head (Doc 1).
