Don’t Let the AI Byte. Mankind will be reduced to a lazy, incapable, and less dominant being because of artificial intelligence (AI). This idea is a possible future outcome if artificial intelligence is allowed to be created and used in people’s everyday lives. That is because AI is there to replace human’s need to think. AI’s main purpose is to make people’s lives easier and help reduce the number of mistakes made in society. AI has already been partially implemented in speech recognition software and customer services systems, but the systems can only work so well. "A number of products are available that feature AI, but they 're highly personalized” (Ramaswami 42). Products such as Dragon Speech are used for talking to a computer that translates speech to text. AI can only recognize what it is programmed to recognize currently though. Accents and speech tendencies can be foreign to a computer system. AI can work well in a limited atmosphere, but it can’t fully function in the real world because AI has limitations in what it can do. If AI’s speech recognition was fully capable though, it could be used for devastating possibilities. A suicide bomber may not have to risk their life anymore if they could place and activate a bomb through talking to an intelligent computer. The number of threats eliminated would never decrease then. The computer intelligence that Jastrow mentioned was about imitated human brain and reasoning mechanism. However, according to Levy, computer intelligence nowadays is about developing AI’s own reasoning pattern and handling complicated task from data sets and algorithms, which is nothing like human. From Levy’s view on today’s version of AI technology, Jastrow’s prediction about AI evolution is not going to happen. As computer intelligence does not aim to recreate a human brain, the whole idea of computer substitutes human does not exist. The Debate Over Artificial Intelligence Can machines be able to think? Or rather, can we develop true artificial intelligence in the sense of machines that think and understand as we humans do? This is an interesting problem that is becoming more and more relevant in our lives as computers become more complex and integral to our lives. Two articles, John Searle's "Minds, Brains, and Programs" and William Lycan's "Robots and Minds", present two different answers to this question and also raise several new questions. John Searle takes the position that on one level computers do think they manipulate symbols - yet on another level they do not think computers do not understand the symbols they are manipulating to mean anything in the sense that we humans do.
Nick Bilton starts “Artificial Intelligence as a Threat” with a comparison of Ebola, Bird flu, SARS, and artificial intelligence. Noted by Bilton, humans can stop Ebola, bird flu, and SARS. However, artificial intelligence, if it ever exceeds human intelligence, would not be stoppable by humans. Bilton, in his article, argues that AI is the biggest threat to humans at our current time, more serious than Ebola and other diseases.
