The United States if one of the few countries that stands in opposition of legal prostitution. Those who advocate the decriminalization of prostitution believe it should be done so by regulating and licensing prostitutes, claiming that “…legalizing would eliminate the criminal element of the trade, leading to safer working conditions and better health for both prostitutes and their clients.” (Sexton & Cushman, 2013)
In the perception of legalizing prostitution, it is seen as a victimless crime, which, in this case, means all consenting parties are aware of the illegal act and its consequences. Advocators believe it “…should be treated as a private and legal arrangement between consenting adults. If prostitution was legalized the government would have to assist in the discouragement of “…street prostitution, open solicitation, and advertisement, and would still prohibit others to manage or profit from prostitution.” Prostitutions themselves see this scenario as faulty because they feel some level of physical protection is necessary considering the unknown risk factors.
