The Army is an American Profession of Arms, a vocation comprised of experts certified in the ethical application of land combat power, serving under civilian authority, entrusted to defend the Constitution and the rights and interests of the American people.

To be able to answer the question, “What it means to be a Profession?” one must first ask themselves, “What is the definition of Profession?” A Profession is defined as a paid occupation, especially one that involves prolonged training and a formal qualification. The key words that stick out are prolonged training and formal qualification. Professions produce uniquely expert work, not routine or repetitive work. As a Profession’s Leader you fall under a far bigger and wider role. There is the role of a profession soldier also the role of a leader. There is a very fine balance. NCO’s in today’s military are trained to learn to balance to two. While obtaining all the required training you can get you also have to insure the proper training of your soldiers. It takes a very special dedicated NCO to know how to get both jobs done. That’s why we attend schools like WLC, ALC, and so forth. Your soldier needs must come before your own.
The Army Professional Culture. When I think of the culture aspect I think of words like trust, honorable service and stewardship. The main one of those three being trust. We as soldiers have to have a special trust with our subordinates as well as our peers. But most importantly we have to develop a trust with civilians. Trust is the bedrock of the relationship between the Army Profession and the American People – it is vital to the profession. Human Resources are defined as the division of a company that is focused on activities relating to employees. So as a HR in the military your main focus is the wellbeing of your soldiers. That could range anywhere from pay, promotions, leave and absents and the list goes on and on. Also as HR you take on many roles. HR‘s are Professions, Leaders, Teachers, Guidance Counselors and whatever else is needed from the soldiers and the unit may need. I personally love being that go to person for my unit.
